dress code

Where I work we have a business attire dress policy that has pretty much been lightly enforced for as long as I have worked here.

My company just hired a new Director who sent a email last week saying all men must wear a suit and ladies must were business suits as well.

A co-worker and a very good friend of mine got a warning from the new Director for not wearing panty hose today. She said she is probably going to give her 2 weeks notice later today because she can't stand wearing panty hose and that the company has no right to be the fashion police.

My advice to her was to make sure she has another job lined up and it is something pretty petty to quit over. Her response to me was " you are a guy and do not have to wear pantyhose".

Re: dress code

  • I agree that it's pretty crazy to leave her job over it, (especially if she doesn't have a new job lined up) but I have to agree that they have no right to demand that she wears pantyhose. I can understand making her wear a suit, but is she allowed to wear a pantsuit, or equivalent? It seems a little sexist to demand that she wears pantyhose.

Our Director is a woman so I guess it really is not sexist and the VP of our division is a woman as well....I am not sure who came up with the dress code in the first place.

Yes she can wear a pantsuit and was told that knee highs are considered part of the proper business attire. Not sure what the big deal would be there but she is saying she dislikes wearing those too. She said she feels as if they forcing her to dress like a grandmother....lol

  • I really don't understand why women get so upset over wearkng pantyhose. it's silly to quit over this.

  • Is it possible that this could just be the last straw?  I know when our company got bought out there were a lot of changes and people quit over some of them.

  • I thought that she might be tired of the job and was looking for a reason to leave; However, she told me that she loves her job and has a great commute.

She is dressed accordingly today and is pouting about it. Saying her feet are hot and she uncomfortable. She mentioned to me that her husband told her that he finds pantyhose sexy on women...So I do not know if that pushed her closer to the edge or not....lol

  • I hate pantyhose and will never wear them!

Thankfully I work with preschoolers so jeans and tshirts are my daily attire.

  • I have never worn panty hose and there is no way I would wear it for a job.  Granted, I would not quit my job because of that, but if they write you up for silly things such as that I would more likely get fired.
  • to quit over wearing panty hose sounds extremely foolish.  I think she just wants to create drama in her life.
