My husband and I are looking to move in a few months. We'd like to buy a house, but I have some medical debt, so we're going to have to rent for another year... sadly. We currently live in Pottstown, PA, but our choices for apartments are pretty slim. Same thing with the surrounding towns. We're toying with the idea of moving to Philly (he works in Chesterbrook, I work in King of Prussia) so commute would be about the same it is now.
Long story short, we have no idea what areas of the city are safe (and towns surrounding Philly) and which ones to totally stay away from. We're expecting our first child in about 2 weeks, so it needs to be family friendly as well. Thank you! ![]()
Re: Safest areas of Philly
What's your price range. Are you looking for a row home, apt or single family? Is on street parking ok? Family friendly means what to you? Like good schools or walking distance to park's?
Ditto above. What is "affordable" to you? I'm familiar with some of the price points in Pottstown and you may not find the same living space for the price at the safety level that you want.
I wouldn't necessarily count out every suburb near KoP/Chesterbrook. There are some affordable cute places to rent (both apartments and small houses) in the burbs around that area.
I'm all for city living, but don't forget that you'll pay city wage tax of 3.9% if you live in the city and then work in KoP.
This. It worked out fine for me because my commute went from ~12 miles of pure traffic to 2 miles (still of pure traffic but not nearly as bad). Even with the city wage tax I now have to pay, I still save on gas/wear and tear to my car and got about an hour of my own time back. But that doesn't sound like it would be the case for you.
2 mile commute! I'm jealous. Yeah, I totally agree--like a commute from E. Falls/Mt. Airy to Bala/Conshy would be easy. She's coming from Pottstown, which is pure hell on 422 to KoP. I drive into CC once a month, and the backup I see going west to KoP is crazy, even at dark-o-thirty that I'm driving in.
East Falls to Bala is my commute and it is pretty great!
