Rug Doctor

Has anyone ever rented a Rug Doctor? We have all hardwood floors but we just pulled our 8X10 rug out of the basement for the "playroom" - it used to be in the dining room so there is one corner that is dirty/warn and like I said, then it sat rolled up in our basement for a year. Since the babies will be crawling all over it eventually, we'd like to shampoo it.

Are the Rug Doctor machines totally gross? Like am I just washing it with gross junk thats stuck in there from other people or is it worth it?

I'm open to other inexpensive suggestions as well. Thanks!!

Re: Rug Doctor

  • I've rented them to move out of several apartments.  One apt required us to do it before we left and the other, well, with cats we just felt we had to do it to make sure we got our security deposit back.

Personally, they are heavy and annoying to use. And you have to buy the chemical to use, so whatever the rental fee is ($20? I don't remember) add another $20 on top of it to get the liquid.  I never thought they did much of anything but wet your carpet and make it smell chemically clean.  Personally, you'd be better off either 1. buying a little green machine or 2. getting it professionally cleaned.

Since you don't have any other carpet, maybe the green machine isn't a good investment... I think it's $80 or so.  I have a flyer from a local guy running a special over the summer for $100 for an 8x10 area rug, so that's probably what we are going to do.

  • I would clean my carpets annually with one. It's worth it to rent one. They are sanitized after each use, but if you are concerned I'd try to find a supermarket and/or hardware store where folks may not rent them as often.  You can get $5 and $10 off coupons on RugDoctor.com.

Since Julia-dog joined us, we stopped buying chemical stuff to clean the house.  I have used this recipe below with the Rug Dr. and the rugs came out AWESOME!  (Yeah, I know, it says that you should only use their products when renting a Rug Dr, but I haven't been arrested yet.)

We had light colored, wall-to-wall berber rugs in our old house and they looked new. Despite vacuuming all of the time, I was mortified by the amount of dirt/dust it picked up.   http://www.naturemoms.com/natural-carpet-cleaner-recipe.html

  • Erbur..thanks for the recipe. I wasn't too concerned about the chemicals upstairs bc we aren't letting the dog in the playroom and clearly the kids won't be playing on it for a long time but I figured while I had it, I'd clean the area rug in the living room where Binny sleeps all the time. I was curious if that could potentially not be good for her. I will use what you gave me though!

  • Erbur..can I get Castille Soap and GSE at the food store??

  • Yes. Trader Joes and Wegmans both sell Dr. Bonner's Castille soap. I know Wegman's sells essential oil extracts in their "natural food" department.  I did not use GSE in my mixtures, I just used Lavender extract and some citrus extract (just a few drops of the citrus). You can also use eucalyptus extract, too, just go VERY light on it--like 2-3 drops is all you need.
  • Perfect...thanks!
