Crafty/creative friends-help, please!

Ok, Jake is having a Batman themed birthday party next month with some of his friends from preschool (at our house...hold me)  There will probably be around 8-10 kids, so I'm trying to think of ways to keep them entertained (read: not destroying anything in my home)  I'm thinking the party will be for about 2 hours, with one hour of entertaining them, followed by food, cake, presents.

I came across this idea for having them make superhero masks (which seems much simpler than having them make capes, which was my original thought), here is a picture of the finished mask....I'm assuming that the string is a piece of elastic. How does one affix elastic to a piece of felt?  Will it tie off in neat little knots that I can loop through the mask (with a hole punch or something?)  will this require a hot glue gun?

ETA-forgot the picture:

  • I wouldn't make a hole with a puncher - it could be too big. But maybe a pin hole sized one, and the the elastic should tie off nicely. (As I think about masks I've seen.)

As far as I'm concerned, for the sake of your house and sanity, you only need to to "work" until the party is over - then it's the parents' problem. LOL And even if it doesn't work for the two hours, remember - it's because they are boys, inherently bred to be destroyers. Stick out tongue

  • I'd do a good heavy duty stapler (so it can go through felt). That usually works for holding elastic :)
  • so will the children be cutting out the masks? Or just decorating them? I agree a hole punch would be over kill (and doubtful the hole puncher would work on the felt anyway). But you could staple it on, making sure the open end of the staple is on the outside to prevent scratches on their face- and use like 1/4 inch elastic. maybe even folding the end under into the staple two so it is like two layers (and thicker so it doesn't pull through the staple.)
  • I think I'll probably cut the masks & put the elastic on ahead of time, then just let them go to down decorating it.  I'll cut out other felt stars, and....?  something else.

  • Are you attaching the elastic before the party?  If so, you could hand stitch the elastic to the masks.  Obviously not as fast and easy as stapling, but just another idea!
  • so gluing felt can sometimes suck. Just an FYI. Maybe some of those foam stickies will stick to the felt mask?  Glitter glue could be fun but would have to dry.  and if you went with a light colored mask, they could just use markers to make patterns. be sure to experiment first!

Oh no, gluing was my plan.  I figured I would just put out little bottles on the table and it would be something the kids could easily do themselves. :(  I could try the foam stickies.

I was going to suggest using foam pieces too.  Much less mess for you too (they work like stickers).  As far as the elastic, I think stapling should work or cut a small slit instead of a whole punch.

  • I think they make foam mask kits--in which case the foam stickers will defintely stick to them.

I think the key to keep them from destroying your house is to keep them in one central location.  Maybe you could create a cardboard box bat cave or something they could play in after they create their masks.

  • What about creating the masks themselves out of foam paper instead of felt? This is on amazon:

You might have just saved me a lot of time and frustration with that suggestion, look what I found on Hobby Lobby's site.  it comes with all of this stuff, so that would be good because they could still put them together, but it would be much less work on my part:

    • 8 felt masks
    • 16 adhesive felt deco stickers
    • 122 glitter foam stickers
    • 8 pieces of 12 1/2" elastic cord

  • I agree, all foam may be the easiest in allowing them to DIY.  Eleni has had some felt type crafts and I was upset to find the elmers glue just gets sucked into the fabric and doesn't stick to itself.
  • Oooh - I like the kit!

I also like that it's only $4.99, so even if I have to buy 2 kits, that's not bad.  I'll pay a little more to keep my sanity in tact, even if it would be a bit cheaper to do it myself :)

My overall plan is to have them make their mask, then be enrolled in "superhero school", where they will get a Batman tattoo (thank you, target dollar bins), play "pin the mask" on something (I haven't thought of how to do this yet, but I'm sure it's out there on pinterest), and some type of guessing game like this:
