Between a rock and a hard place (school)

I seriously don't know what to do. I had taken a few courses this fall to go towards some pre-reqs I need to get into dental hygiene school. I applied to one school and was accepted into the general studies program. I have several pre-reqs to take before I can apply to the program. I was going to apply for the assisting program and get going with that, hopefully for the fall. I can't apply to hygiene school until Feb 2014, and even then I may not get in. My state requires certification to be an assistant, and I want to get into an office and do that while I wait to get into the hygiene program, as I may need to apply a few times (it's that competitive).

Anyway. As it turns out, EVERY class I need is FULL and each with a waiting list that is full. Gah! This is so frustrating to say the least, and I feel like I am at a complete standstill. To get into the assisting program, there is only one class I need, but it's full. So, I checked another class I would need towards hygiene. Every section...full. If I don't take that course (it's anatomy) now, it puts me behind and I won't be able to apply for 2014.

Confused yet? I never thought this would be such an uphill battle. Another option I have is to continue taking classes where I am now, and apply to their assistant program for the fall. I could still finish everything I need for hygiene there, but apply to a different school for the program (the school I was accepted to has a few reqs that can NOT be taken elsewhere, and the school I am at doesn't have a hygiene program, only assisting).

I am so bewildered right now. Really, I am.

  • ugh that is so frustrating...these medical programs are all alike. I am an admissions counselor for nursing transfers and they all have the same issues.Unfortunately, schools have their own mandates and it stinks. I wish you luck in achieving your goal. It will be worth it in the end!

  • My college had this policy where a professor could "pink slip" you in. Essentially you show up for the first day of class, they decided whether or not they can squeeze one more person in or see if anyone drops it. If they sign your pink slip, you're allowed to enter the class. Does your school have anything like that?

How sure are you that you want to work in the dental field? Could you get your assisting certification at your current school, work in an office for a year or so to see if you really like it and then re-apply for a hygiene program?

School can be so frustrating! I'm sorry :(

  • Hang in there. I know that sometimes they can add you if someone drops, but it can be really tough. I'm not allowed to let anyone in my classes after they are full. It depends on the school.

I wish you the best. I can remember being frustrated like you are.
