Loong Christmas Vacation...

I found out at work this week that the plant is going to be shut down for two weeks.  I'll be off starting Saturday, December 20th, and going back to work Monday, January 5th.  It's 2 weeks off, and thankfully, 5 paid holidays, but I still have to take at least 3 vacation days and make the decision between taking 2 days unpaid or 2 days vacation.

Normally I'd take the vacation, but since I'm taking all 12 weeks of maternity I can with FMLA, I have to decide when I want to take those 2 days unpaid.

I know I should be happy that I have a job, it's just that any other year this wouldn't be an issue.

WWYD?

Re: Loong Christmas Vacation...

  • I would take 3 vacation days and 2 days unpaid.

You get 12 weeks with FMLA paid?  Where I work, they would only let us take 6 weeks for a vaginal birth or 8 weeks for a c/s.  If we wanted to take the full 12 weeks, we had to use vacation time for the rest or take it unpaid. It really pissed me off because I had enough "catastrophic" time banked that I could of taken the whole 12 weeks paid from that, but ended up only getting 6 weeks from that and took the other 3 weeks from vacation time.

  • Sara - we don't get the full 12 weeks paid - it's the combo of short term disablilty (6 wks vaginal birth or 8 w/c section), vacation, then the rest unpaid.  That's why I'm thinking about taking the unpaid vacation sooner and then getting 2 more days paid when I'm out with FMLA.

I would be pissed too, that you had all that "catastrophic" time (is that like sick time?) and couldn't use it.  That doesn't seem fair.
