How long do you wait for a call before giving up?

I applied for a marketing job over a week ago. I am definitely qualified for the job and I even possess the skills listed as an "added plus" in the job description.

If I don't get this job, I'm finally giving up on the marketing field (I've been without a full-time position for over 3 years since graduating from college) and going back to school for paralegal studies.

My question is, how long do I wait before I know I am not being considered for the position? I know the holidays are coming up so it may be longer than usual. I usually am patient about these kind of things, but since I'm contemplating school again, I'm slightly antsy.

TIA for your response. I feel like this is a silly question.

Re: How long do you wait for a call before giving up?

  • If I interviewed this month, I would wait until 1st week of January. Most jobs (at least in my field and location) will send automatic email when position is no longer available and you're not chosen. I would keep checking online to see if the position you applied for closes or not.
  • At this time of year, they may be waiting until after the new year to start calling candidates for an interview.

Then again, maybe they dropped the ball or a thousand other things could have happened.

I see no harm in asking if your resume was received.

After that, wait until a few days after Christmas, then call to follow up again and request an interview.. See what happens then.
  • I empathize with you! It took me four years out of college to get my first real job. Four years! I worked 2-3 crappy part-time jobs for all four years and it sucked SO bad! I was depressed and negative about life, especially this past summer (I got hired for first real job in late August).

I'm so sorry you've had the experience I did because I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. For me, my self esteem took a hit. I have a BA & experience in the field I applied in throughout all four years and couldn't get hired.

As for your question, you could call after a week past the end date for turning in applications and inquire where they are in the process. The whole process of interviewing & hiring is annoyingly slow across the board, at least in my field.

I wish you luck, whatever you decide to do.
