Fios?

Anyone love it?  Hate it?

We just got Fios in our area and the Verizon people have been walking around lately making house calls.  Their current deal for the triple play for two years is $99 with a $300 Visa gift card.  Can you negotiate on price with them like Comcast after the deal is up?

Re: Fios?

  • I heard that with the visa gc offered, you're signing a 2 or 3 year contract that is either non-negotiable or hard to get out of.  I could be wrong though.

Fios is ok.  We have it.  I can't stand their on demand, the way the guide looks and it seems there is always a delay from the remote to the tv.  That cold just be me though.

As far as negotiating pricing, we've had it for a year, and think we have the price locked in for 2 years.

Oh and another thing, with comcast, they offer you free McAfee with the internet, Fios does not, they charge you an additional 10 bucks

My parents were having that problem.  Try changing the batteries.  Apparently their fios remote eats through batteries really quickly.  We don't have that problem...but they do and they know it's time to change it when they start getting the delay.  Or you could request a new remote.  They are good with equipment replacements through the mail.

  • We have it but only because it was in our neighborhood when we bought our house in 2009.  It's fine.  I think Comcast and Verizon are terrible in terms of pricing and whatnot, but both equally the same in our experience.  We had Comcast in our old house.

    We've negotiated pricing several times.

  • We have fios and really like it.  We've had it for several years now.  We do get new deals whenever our current deals expire.  You just need to call and ask about deals for current customers.  I think you can also do it online if you see a deal on their website that looks good.

I think the internet is faster, the customer service is better, and the price is better for us...and they have all the channels I'd want.

I wouldn't get McAfee antivirus anyway.  There are much better free ones.  I like Avast.

  • We just switched from Comcast to Fios over the Summer after Comcast refused to give me a better deal. Overall, we are happy but I have the same complaints about the guide and the slight delay with the remote. I thought it had to do with the way our cable box faces our couch though - its not quite dead on straight. We did just have to change the batteries in the remote after only 5-6 months and I can't ever remember having to change the comcast remote batteries. It really does go through them fast!

  • I'll try the batteries.  But when I hit guide, the tv kind of flickers and it takes a couple of clicks of the remote to get the guide to come up.  I only seem to have this issue in the bedroom, and like runningwithpearls said, it could be the way the box is positioned.
  • Yeah, I think that might be a different issue.  My parents it's more like you push the up channel button...it just sits there, so you think it didn't register your push.  You push it again and it ends up going up two channels.  Or same thing with pushing in numbers.  Annoying.
  • I have Fios and I love it.  I actually prefer the guide over Comcast's now.  We've had it since we moved out of the city about 4 years ago.  I think both are overpriced, but I find the customer service and actual service better with Fios.
  • We have the same issue with our Fios remotes - it is really my only complaint with them though.  That being said - it really does seem to be the remote.  We have google TV and when I use the google TV keyboard to access the Fios guide, on demand, etc it is way faster than using the remote that comes with the boxes.  So for some reason, it just seems like the remotes suck.

I did have some problems when we first got the service with the boxes not working ... but we had a great experience with their customer service.  We actually found the online "chat" customer service super fast with little to no wait (compared to waiting on hold on the phone).

It is annoying.  I'll hit 506, and it comes up 506, but then channel 1960 comes up with a memo box that this channel is not available.  Super annoying.

  • We had Comcast for several years and switched to FIOS about 3-4 years ago and are pleased. Like others, I have found the remote to sometimes be an issue, but we've never had FIOS go out/offline like we experienced with Comcast.

On a fairly regular occasion, the Comcast box would not show the time and would be flashing lights in the front. During this, you could not turn on the cable or get a wireless signal. We'd call Comcast and they'd say to unplug the box, wait a bit, call back, they'd send a "signal" from their office, blah blah blah. The call would usually end with "let me send a technician out."  Most times, the problem would resolve itself in a few hours.

I cannot stand the door-to-door sales of either company.   We do not have a contract with FIOS and have seen our rates stay steady for the last few years. We also moved in the process and they honored our same rate at our new house and installed the FIOS for free (again).

  • One silly thing that I do love about Fios too is that the channels never switch no matter where you are.  For instance, Fox is 513 whether I'm at my place or my sister's place, half an hour away.
  • We've had it for years. The deals change all the time and once your deal expires, you can usually call and negotiate for some sort of discount. Just prepared to be on the phone for about an hour to do it.

H had a really bad experience with Comcast moving from one apartment to another, he was being billed for both. He was on the phone with them constantly, he HATES comcast now, so we have fios, I don't really have a preference either way, I really don't feel a difference at all between them.
