Santa likes me, other reindeer hate me

Sorry for the Christmas pun, but thats the way my new job has been over the past 6 months. Upper management likes me and thinks I have great potential. But when I ask any of my colleages for help or for an answer, they either blow me off completely or are nasty to me. I'm in agricultural equipment sales, and while I have a background in ag, the job I have is half technical and half science. Basically, when you go to sell the equipment, you need to know all the technical aspects (plumping, electrical, etc). But once it's sold, it has a huge impact on the scientific sides of the farm (microbiology, animal science, etc). My coworkers have been doing the technical side of things for 20+ years, and do not know the science. So when i struggle with the tech side, they roll their eyes, ignore me, or ask "how do you not know this??" But I have been holding meetings and having conversations with them about the science side and have been very active in improving the product in that aspect. So I can honestly only do half my job right now.

My manager has tried so hard to force my coworkers to help me but its been terrible. I would rather let them deal with the tech side, and just be responsible for the science side, but I don't know if thats something I should ask for. I also wonder if this job is even a good fit for me if I am constantly met with such resistance. I am supposed to be the main person working with this product and yet I see my colleages sneaking around having conversations about the product without me being involved, and then not filling me in.

Do I start looking for a new job since this is so hard to work with these people? Or do I try to talk my boss into letting me do what i am good at only? What else can I do???

Re: Santa likes me, other reindeer hate me

  • Can you kill them with kindness?  Seriously, bring baked goods or wom other food to the meetings. It's stupid, but people respond to that.  What else do you do to get to know them on a personal level?  Have you eaten lunch with anybody?  Can you start?

When you get grief about something you don't know -- even when it's snarky & mean -- be gracious.  You're right.  I know you have been doing this for a long time but the tech side is still a bit new to me; I have always focused on the science but I'm confident that with your help I'll learn faster & we can get this job done.

Yes, you are articifically kissing their . .^%$#, but what else is there besides a new job where things might not be better?
