Glucose Test

So I failed my one hour and need to take the three hour.  I was really shocked and not sure if being sick when I took it had anything to do with it.  DH is convinced it's a money making scheme by the insurance.  Any thoughts?

Re: Glucose Test

  • Do you know what your number was?
  • They told me it was "slightly elevated" and that's it. Ironically, DH actually told me to go to the lab or the doctor and ask for a copy of the report myself.

  • I'm no doctor by any means, but as someone who had GD, I can tell you that it's probably just a precaution.  They have to rule it out.

I failed my one hour test so spectacularly that I'm shocked they even made me take the 3 hour because it was so clear that I had it.

What did you eat before you took the test?

  • I only slightly failed my one hour, and I also slightly failed my 3 hour. I was told that even if you "just" fail, you still have GD and you still need to monitor it carefully. (I didn't have GD with DS#1, but I have it this time...it's really all up to your hormones.)

It honestly hasn't been too bad...you just need to alter the way you eat a bit, and spread out your carbs throughout the day. If you have any other questions let me know!

(ETA: I also failed my 1 hour with DS#1, but passed my 3 hour...so you never know. You might be fine!)

  • Most likely just takes your body longer to process. But it is safest to do the three hour. I think your h is being a little drastic.
  • I had the same thing happen to me and I ended up passing the 3 hour test.

A little about gd and the testing - the 1 hour is screening, the 3 hour is diagnostic. They cast a wide net on the 1 hour to make sure they don't miss a diagnosis of gd.

Uncontrolled and undiagnosed GD can be bad for baby and mom. It can restrict flow of blood, nutrients and oxygen to the fetus. It can also lead to a very large baby (macrosomia) and up the risk of shoulder distocia (getting stuck), operative vaginal births (episiotomy), the need for vacuum/forceps extraction, and c-section. In reverse it can also result in a small baby and low amniotic fluid.

It also puts baby at risk for hypoglycemia - low blood sugar - at birth and can land even a full term baby in the NICU. The first vaginal birth I saw this semester was a 36 week baby that was 9#5oz and she ended up in the nicu due to poor blood sugar maintenance.

So with that said, docs and nurses don't mess around with GD. If you have it and they caught it, that's good and they can help you manage it. If you don't have it, it's 3 hours that you won't get back but it's not that bad. Just bring some food and something to read or listen to.

    Good luck.

  • Thanks ladies for the reassurances!  We were just a little stunned because I don't seem to meet any of the risk factors.  I am fully prepared to sit in Quest for 3 hours on Wednesday reading a book. It got me out of work for the day too ;)  If I have it, I have it and I'll do whatever it takes for my little guy to be healthy and safe.

  • Also, bring some food to eat immediately afterwards. I didn't and almost passed out waiting in line for a bagel.
