Take the plunge?

Hi ladies,

This may sound silly but I'm really torn. I grew my hair long for the wedding an wore it down an curly but now its driving me nuts! It's always been long or "longish" being below my shoulder but its a good 4 or so inches longer now... And the longer it gets the more unruly it seems. I've been thinking of trying a long layered bob style, but i'v never gone that short so I'm really nervous.... I know itll grow but its always always been below shoulder. But part of me is curious to know if i'll suit me an it seems like itll be easier to manage but im also unsure. Long hair can be gorgeous but i dont have the time or energy to spend an hour + making it look gorgeous every morning an lately it seems more an more difficult to style and stay put.... Hubby keeps teasing an asking me if ive plugged myself in, lol.

So should i take the plunge and chop it? Anyone else experience this and did you regret it?

Re: Take the plunge?

  • I did it last winter, I loved the cut, the style suited me, but the maintenance and the upkeep is lot more than long hair.  I had to style my hair everyday, otherwise it would not look nice and well kept, with long hair, I would just add a defrizzing serum and put in pony tail if I was running late. I could also go without a trim with long hair for a while, but with shorter specially if you have long bob but with a little bit of angle and swing, you need to get a trim every 6-8 weeks, depending how fast your hair grows.

I am letting my hair grow long again.

  • Hmm that's interesting, I didn't think shorter would mean more up keep. Unfortunately i cant just use a lil serum, its not enough.... And i hate using a lot of product but even for a pony i need a lot to keep it in place. I just dont know what to do with it lately.
  • Why are you thinking about going short? you need a different style because you had the same style for so long? or you need something with less maintenance/work to get ready in the morning?

If it's the latter, have you thought about getting a brazilian or Keratin treatment to straighten your hair. I did it once, it lasted 2 months, and it was so easy, I would wash my hair and just blow dry, not even using a brush just use the dryer to dry the hair, and my hair was silky smooth. I didn't have to put use any additional products.

  • Its a little bit of both but mostly the maintenance thing... I thought about the treatments but they are $$$ here, especially to do it on a regular basis. And my hair is fairly thick so even blow drying my hair without a brush takes a bit of time. I want to have a nice flattering style without spending hours doing it with tons of product... Is that unreasonable? Lol maybe my hairs hopeless.
  • hi there-

My advice is to start with a trim. If you still hate the length in a few months, then go for the chop.  Long hair can be oh-so lush and sexy, but sometimes it can also be downright annoying. A way to keep your length and sanity is to deep hair ties and clips handy so you can sweep it up, when needed.

    Good luck!

  • I did the exact same thing, grew hair out for wedding and ended up with a rats nest. I just asked my stylist for some serious layers and it made a huge difference. Plus doing layers allows you to frame your face better while keeping length and cuts off a lot of the dead ends and frizzy spots.
  • This is how I decided to radically change my hair. I told myself this:

    1. Am I happy with my hair now? (no)

    2. If I change it and dont like it, then I wont be any worse off now because I dont like it now either, right?                                                                                                                                                                            3. it will grow out if it sucks, but I might love it instead!

  • I wouldn't do a long bob. You will hate it. There is an awkward stage and that sounds like it. Either chop it or don't.

I remember agonizing about the decision forever but I chopped it and haven't looked back since.
