Help ? Christmas dilemma at work!

So, at the last place I worked there weren?t Christmas present exchanges. The first year I worked there I brought in some candy for my supervisors, but I quickly realized that no one did that there. Exchange Christmas cards, yes. Presents, no.

Last year at Christmas, my boss and I had only been here a couple of months. We exchanged cards. That?s what I was planning to do again this year.

Except, yesterday he and the other department managers took us out to lunch (on their own dime, this was separate from the company party). And today he gave me a gift card to Applebee?s in my Christmas card as well as a little tin of buckeyes.

I love working with him, but I hadn?t planned to get him anything. Now I feel like a jerk if I don?t. He?s only working a half day tomorrow, so anything I?m going to do has to be tonight?

  • So we both know I am a jerk. But I have never really been behind the buy your boss a present idea. They make more than us. they can buy me lunch once a year. So don't feel guilted into the act of reciprocation. It isn't why people give anyway (except maybe for my sister).

My team makes a donation to the food bank in the name of our manager. Because she is awesome and would basically refuse anything else we would try to give her.

I agree. I think I would just say thank you for the gift and leave it at that. Next year maybe give him a tin of cookies or something.

    Yes and yes!

  • I agree with the PPs.  Gifts go down the food chain, not up the food chain.

ETA: I also think it's very awkward when a gift looks like a recipiratory gift.  So, just say thanks and continue to be a great employee.

  • Ditto the others on Christmas gifts for bosses.  I send a card.  We do pitch in for a Boss's day gift and do donuts for her birthday.
  • Thanks, everyone!

    When is Boss's Day? :-p

I can't remember, but it wasn't that long ago - our admin. always reminds us (probably her way of also reminding us to not forget about admin. professional day!) Although, what I'd really like to know is when it is employees who are not bosses or admin professionals day!  Smile
