Who works on Christmas Eve??

Just a poll to see how many people's companies are open on Xmas Eve?

We are open Monday and Wednesday....I did use PTO for Monday, but I'm just bummed people even have to work on X-mas eve. They did send out an email yesterday saying half of the people in the dept can leave at 3PM on Xmas eve and the other half can work till 3 on New Year's Eve.....Whoop di do!!! that's an hour before many people's normal out time....

Re: Who works on Christmas Eve??

  • We work on Christmas Eve.  I work at a distribution center in the HR department for a retail company.  However, my boss did tell me I can go home whenever.  And as a whole, we're really good about getting people out of here on Christmas Eve.  I'm guessing by around lunchtime it'll be a ghost town.  It just depends on how much they have to do and how fact everyone wants to work.

  • My company is allowing people who need to prepare for Christmas off on Monday (company is Orthodox Jewish). So a lot of the guys have to work along with all the Jewish employees because they're not helping make dinner, etc. Then we are closed Christmas day. I usually take off the day after Christmas but this year with the wedding, I'm out of time!

  • Work at hospital and we're always open, I'm an accountant but still have to work. I'm using vacation time for Xmas eve but will work new years eve.
  • we don't this year because of the way it falls during the week. But normally we have to work until 3. And I work for a Christian organization :-)
  • I've never worked at a company that has Xmas Eve off. I've worked at a college, medical system, and large insurance company. I have always received 6 holidays a year and would have to use vacation time. I'm working this year, but I don't mind, no one comes in and I get so much done :) Last year actually sucked because holidays fell on the weekend so I did not get a day for Xmas and NY. I just started in November though so couldn't take any time off.

I think most large organizations can't give off too many holidays for Christian holidays. They usually have to be sensitive to different religious beliefs. Having a lot of friends that are muslim, hindu and jewish I can understand that.

  • They're work days for us too.  I'm "working" from home though.

  • I techincally had to take a vacation day. Although, we are a three person company. The owner is Jewish and is out of town, and the other girl said she couldn't work because she can't find a babysitter. I had already asked for the day off 3 months ago. So our boss said the office was  "closed" but that we had to use a vacation day.

Which is so stupid. I'm not sure why I am wasting my last vacation day on Xmas eve.

I always had Xmas eve off at my old job. And since I've been here I have had it off since it fell on a Friday my first year (3 years ago) then a Saturday then a Sunday. I don't know how we ended up with Friday off 3 years ago. I think because Christmas was Saturday so she gave us the day off.

I agree that places should be closed. I am italiana nd it's our cultural tradition to have a huge celebration on Xmas eve. Everyone else in my family has the day off. My mom cooks tons of appetizers and we all gather around 12 or 1 then we go to chuch around 3 pm and then we all go out to eat, since it is it the feast of the 7 fishes and no one likes to cook all the fish the day before xmas. I would be SO upset if i had to miss out on tis tradition. Because Christmas day is usually a small meal for us, and most of our cultural and religious celebrations occur on Christmas Eve.

I know my friends were saying they had to work (she's an accountant), and one was upset because she had to work until 5 and mass at her church was at 5:30pm for Christmas Eve and she wouldn't make it there in time and so she had to miss church with her family. She was going to try to leave early, but when I heard from her yesterday she said they didin't let her leave.

I'm at work today and there is no one here. I have 100% ability to work from home but my boss said she wanted someone "physically present" at work today.

I am one of 4 cars in the parking lot that fits about 75 cars.

I also have to work New Year's eve until 3 or 4 pm (big deal! we leave at 5 anyway!). but that isn;t a huge deal to tme because we don't have anything to do until around 9 pm.

  • I was prepared to but it was made a Federal holiday (I work for the fed. gov.).
