QOTD 12/21

DH and I always have this ongoing debate around Christmas about when to open stockings.  He grew up opening them first and I grew up opening them last.  I gave into him and we open stocking first at our house since he says that they should be filled with candy, little toys and fun stuff like that.  We still open them last at my parents house though.

When do you open stockings and what do you usually put inside them?

Re: QOTD 12/21

  • my family never had actual stockings but my mom used special fabric bags instead.  I think we'd open them first but it didn't really matter if we did them first or last.  we'd always get candy and small toys as kids.  as teenagers we got candy, socks, toiletries, DVDs etc.

  • Growing up, we did them first, and it was always just small things like candy, maybe some cheap jewelry or whatever. Funny enough, I don't know if DH and his family did stockings. He's never talked about it. We did them once, two years ago, at our home, but haven't done them again since. So I guess we're still figuring it out!

  • We always opened them up first too (still do).

They're usually filled with some candy, little things like a nice shower gel, lotion, etc, and maybe a few other little things.

The big debate in our house is whether Santa wraps gifts or not. I grew up in an Italian family, so we did all of our gift opening on Christmas Eve (Christmas Eve is the big Italian dinner). I always got a few things from my parents (those were wrapped) and then Christmas morning I woke up to all the Santa gifts displayed unwrapped under the tree. Everything was put together, had batteries in it, etc. All ready to be played with : )

DH grew up with all of the Santa gifts being wrapped. Santa gifts would be under the tree Christmas morning, but they were all wrapped.

I tend to think that my way is better just because what little kid wants to wait for things to be assembled and for someone to find the batteries. DH of course thinks he's right.

Thank goodness we don't have kids yet, but I think when we do we're going to have to compromise and wrap some of the Santa gifts but the big things that need batteries and assembly will be set up and ready to go.

  • H and his family sometimes FORGET stockings even though they're ready to go and do an "Oh poop!" later and open them.

My family always opened stockings last, usually including cards, toiletries, candy, sometimes a small gift.

My dad usually puts in the very bottom of my mom's stocking a very nice piece of jewelry.... wonder if H will do something like that for me! lol

    Anniversary

  • We always opened presents on Christmas eve and did stockings Christmas morning.

I got H, candy, new boxers and a remote control fart machine for his stocking this year.

  • Open first. As a kid, it was the only thing I was allowed to open before my parents got up and we had breakfast. It kind of just stuck.

  • We always opened them last. It was one more thing to look forward to. We had small items, maybe gift cards etc. I don't think H ever got a stocking from his family. H and I haven't done any yet...maybe next year when he (hopefully) have a house.

  • We don't do them at this point, but we will. H's mom has some set up for us, but we don't get them until after Christmas.

As a child we did stockings first thing in the morning. My mom had knitted neat stockings that were hung up on a door in the house while everything was decorated, and after we went to sleep, my parents would fill them and hang them on our bedposts. We'd get to open them in bed as soon as we woke up. It was usually candy and movies, sometimes books.
