To stay or go??

I work as an HR Coordinator at a mid-size company and have been there for 6 years. I love working in HR but the one thing that bothers me is the boss's daughter and her behavior. She is not a team player, and the fact that the boss(her father) emphasizes teamwork as his motto, it makes it frustrating when his daughter is the exact opposite and her office is right next to mine. Everyone in the HR/Acctg. agrees and so does my direct supervisor, I doubt anything will be done in that aspect. I have mentioned her behavior to my boss a few months back when it started getting ridiculous, but obviously nothing was said to her. I also have been promised raises, promotions, etc. over the last 4 years and nothing has really happened, due in part to our company being in the middle of acquiring other companies-that's the excuse I received when I spoke to my boss about the "promises". I'm getting a pretty decent raise the beg of 2013 though.

With that being said, I have been offered a new position for a marketing asst/office mgmt. at a different company with a bigger pay increase than my potential raise. I talked this over with my boss and he is only willing to go to 1k over my raise, which is 1k less than what the new company is offering.

As far as vacation time/benefits, they are pretty similar when weighing them out. The company that I interviewed with is a smaller company and the work they do is definitely needed in the area I live in. I do enjoy working for smaller companies more than a corporate one, which I am in.

Both of the companies have a pretty good growth potential for me, the new company offers yearly raises and my current employer offers them too but not at the percentage the other company does. I am grateful to have this "dilemma" in this economy, though! This is such a hard decision to make. As much as I dislike working with the boss's daughter I didn't think it would be this difficult.

 Thoughts?

Re: To stay or go??

  • I think you should leave, for some reason (maybe just boss's daughter issue) you applied and interviewed elsewhere which means you're not very happy and would like to leave,I think you should because of $ and the fact that you'd like to work in small company environment, good luck!
  • I agree.  Happy people don't look for jobs.  The fact that you looked and interviewed signals that it's time to move on.

    Good luck!

  • have you already told your boss that you had another offer (which I am assuming from them going up another 1k) if so, then despite any other reason to leave (the daughter, the company restructuring etc) you need to leave.

you should never, ever stay someplace that has given you a counteroffer.

it's asking for it. First, they see you as unloyal and you are the first one on the chopping block, you will be hindeered from further raises, etc

I took a counter offer once, and it was a total nightmare. It wasn't work the $6k i got, it was a horrible situation which I stayed in for another 2 years! (which isn't the norm)....

  • I agree with PP, you told them about the offer, it will likely turn into a nightmare! Especially if you already have issues with the boss's daughter.

Also, use this as a new adventure, you have been with your current company 6 years, the new job is a way for you to develop new skills, meet new people and conquer new challenges while building your resume.

  • I think you would be remiss not to take this opportunity. I can't imagine staying where you are when there is something much better in so many ways.

  • It sounds like you already made your decision to switch companies and now you're just trying to justify that decision.

Go for it! Sounds like a great opportunity for you.
