It's about my sister. Shocking, right?
As you may or may not recall, my sister is a staunch atheist. Naturally I've already been warned not to indoctrinate my niece. Meanwhile, one of my sister's favorite expletives is "Jesus Christ," but whatever.
Anyway, on Christmas I asked if Santa had visited their house. This is the response I got:
"Oh, we still haven't decided if we're going to do that."
I was feeling a little feisty, thanks to some wine, so I pressed the issue. Apparently, while studies have been done that show believing in Santa boosts a child's imagination, they just aren't sure what the benefit of lying to their child would be. So then I said something like, "What about her friends?" and the response I got was...
"Jewish and Muslim children don't believe in Santa and they get along with their friends just fine."
Yes, but Jewish and Muslim children don't have Christmas trees in their houses or Christmas stockings on their mantels and they don't "celebrate" Christmas with their families!!!
I am fully aware that Christmas is a secular holiday for many people, but take away the religious aspects AND the idea of Santa...and what exactly is left? Can anyone tell me? What is the point of Christmas then?
Re: A very judgey post.
Huh.
I am thoroughly confused about this. I think it's pointless to do Christmas if they're not going to "do" Santa.
boy (n): a noise with dirt on it
Please get your niece a dreidel for Xmas next year.
And yeh. If you take Jesus out of Christmas (which I can't even discuss) and then take away the fake meaning of Christmas....you are left with no Christmas.
Janet some days I just don't know what to say when it comes to your sister
The Rowdy Roberts
That makes 2 of us!
I'm assuming the bolded. When we were little Santa only brought us each one big present and filled our stockings. Our parents gave us everything else.
Wow is all I can say to that! She does not even want to try to celebrate the way she was raised?
I find it interesting how different families interpret "Santa." My H family Santa Did not wrap gifts, he just left an unwrapped present under the tree, all the rest of the presents came from his parents. My family Santa brought and wrapped all the presents, so we are still trying to work out the whole "Santa" thing.
That's what we did, too! And we could just play with the unwrapped presents while we waited for my parents to get up, so they never had to deal with their kids waking them up at butt-crack of dawn on Christmas morning.
This is where I'm at.
I have never heard of "Santa" doing that before...lol I looked at DH like he had 10 heads when he told me that!
I'm here too. Plus how is it going to work if/when you and Jim have kids? Won't that sort of ruin Santa for your kids if their cousin doesn't believe?
For some reason I doubt Janet and Jim's future kids are at the top of her priority list.
