we may be going over the cliff but i guess the government will be getting pay raises
Re: we may be going over the cliff but i guess the government will be getting pay raises
It's okay... it evens out since all of their taxes are going to increase anyway.
Ha.
don't they only get a tax increase if they make over $250,000. I find this very annoying.
That's the Bush tax cuts expiration issue. If we hit "THE CLIFF" without a deal, taxes go up on most people.

yeah, i was aware of this. I bet that they will just postpone this cliff thing again just to avoid it. so if taxes don't increase these people still get their pay raise.
Meh. I'm really not going to get fussed by Congress getting a whopping $900 dollar pay raise for the year, considering the usual federal salary bump has been frozen for 2 years. There's nothing new about an automatic bump in January to compensate for rising cost of living and inflation... usually that bump is a lot more than this one.
And hey, if we DO hit 'THE CLIFF,' they'll be paying more than that back! Nobody wins!
I really want to move to Canada right about now.
Aren't you self employed? If you charge $200 per music lessons (sounds high but lets go with it), you can now charge $201. I don't think your customers will bat an eye going up .5% or $1 on a $200 lesson. Go crazy!! Give your self a .5% raise. You deserve it!
...are you employed by the federal government?
Also, am I the only one starting to feel this way by this thread?:
So because you didn't get a raise, no one else should either?
you obviously don't get how self employment is in this economy. People don't want to pay more for the extras in life. DH has had to redo the way he promotes his photography business to keep the same amount of money coming in. so yeah, i could raise my services, BUT i wouldn't have as many people wanting lessons and musicians for their parties. are you kidding me?
nope i didn't say that so don't put words in my mouth, just pointing out the fact what a joke politics has become.
You really could not raise your rates .5%? If parents had to pay $1 more on a $200 lesson, that would be their breaking point. Paying $200 is fine but $201 and little Suzie can't learn a musical instrument. Are you kidding me? I think I would be your target market if I had a child based on my socioeconomic status and I would not bat an eye at paying $1 more for a $200 lesson. I get my hair done every four weeks and my stylist hasn't raised her prices in forever. I just started tipping her $10 more. That is more than .5% but it really is not a big deal in the grand scheme of my life. Honestly, $1 is not going to make or break your target market. So, do you really think people will not book your services over .5% increase? If so, it might be time to find a job that does not involve self employment.
i would keep my current clients that is correct. but new clients would be harder to get. I've already noticed that with a new company that provides me students. They charge way more than what lessons go for in our area and those are the ones that don't sign up. So yeah, you may be my target client, but that would be the rarity. when people loose jobs the fine arts are usually the first to go. And I will never give up self employment. it's way better than sitting in a cubicle banging my head against the desk wondering if this is all there is in life. right.....
So, basically they're getting a cost of living pay increase?
Ok.
Woo hoo. We will be rolling in dough now. I can start using mid-grade gas again.
Also, I love how federal workers are now considered Obama's people. Yup. He's got the air traffic controller in his pocket.
The amount of uneducated ridiculousness is amusing at this point. Try actually reading an article that details the tiny pay increase for federal workers instead of an op-ed filled blog post. You may learn a thing or two about how much federal workers actually make versus the private sector. Or do facts just get in the whine of your moaning about half truths?
The OP's linked blog post is 2 months old. So pardon the not so recent news articles pertaining to it.
http://www.federalnewsradio.com/204/3195336/House-bill-blocks-pay-increase-for-feds
In an executive order issued late last month, President Barack Obama mandated an end to the two-year pay freeze with a 0.5 percent increase for federal employees beginning March 27. Previously, Obama indicated he would up federal pay but only after a stop-gap continuing resolution funding the government on a short-term basis expired.
The House bill, introduced by Rep. Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.), cancels the planned pay increase, which he says would cost $11 billion over the next decade.
The House is set to debate the measure next week.
In addition, the increase did not pass. Instead a pay freeze happened.

The House measure, approved on a 261-154 vote, blocks an executive order issued by President Barack Obama last December that would give the nation's 2 million civilian federal workers a 0.5 percent cost-of-living raise from March 27, when the current federal spending agreement expires, through the end of the year.
So, no. Once again your facts aren't correct. No such thing is happening. But hey, thanks for playing.
