How many of you have changed jobs shortly AFTER closing on a house?

Just wondering who has changed job shortly after closing on a house and does it affect the new mortgage in any way?  I have heard that once you sign the papers you could change jobs when you want but not sure how true that is??

Re: How many of you have changed jobs shortly AFTER closing on a house?

  • Once everything is signed and closed, it won't affect your mortgage. We moved about an hour away when we bought our first house, so I changed jobs around the time of the move. I actually got hired at the new place and had to give my 2 weeks notice at the old place a little sooner than I planned...3 weeks before we closed on the house (I know, clearly not a smart move). My real estate agent and mortgage broker kinda flipped on me, and we moved the closing up by a few days so that I was technically still employed at the old place the day we closed. The way it worked for us (in Texas, and with this particular company, I don't know if it is different elsewhere) was that on the day we closed, the mortgage company called my place of employment listed on our application and asked three questions, If I was currently employed with the company, How long had I been there, and What they considered my potential with the company to be. Most companies refuse to answer the last one because they cannot legally predict your future with the company (you could technically quit or get fired any day). After closing is said and done, none of this will be revisited and you're free to do what you want :)

GL! Buying a house and changing jobs all at once is tough, hope everything works out for you!
