2nd job for extra cash-any suggestions?

I currently work nights 7p-7a as a nurse 3 times a week. I'm childless and am looking to buy a home in another year. Wanting to save as much as I can and I am considering picking up an extra job.

Anyone have any suggestions in regards to places?

If I were to do this it would need to be somewhat flexible to accomodate my schedule which is never consistent but I have it 6 weeks out most of the time.

Do many places (restaurants, department stores, etc) have workers that are on an "as needed" basis and you can say hey I can work 1 day next week or whatever?

Just curious if anyone has any experience with this?

Thanks!

  • I would just start applying around - if you get an interview explain the situation.

Most part-time work is pretty flexible because they're used to working around college student schedules etc. So long as you're upfront about your availability it shouldn't be a problem.

  • Lots of part time work lets you switch shifts, pick up other people's shifts, etc. It's intended to be filler around the core schedules. Definitely be honest about your constraints up front. People like hard workers and anyone who wants to take on part time work on top of that schedule has to be committed!
  • Have you considered a prn nursing position? I was looking at bringing in some extra cash for saving for a house as well. I looked around and had no desire to spend another shift in a hospital, but an opportunity popped up so I took it. I work 3 nights a week at my FT job, and then 1-2 days/pay period at a prn job. I work with kids FT so I took a job working with adults at another facility. I absolutely dred waking up so early (there is a reason I usually work nights!). But, I've found that, for one or two shifts, it isn't so bad, plus, working at another hospital means the people scheduling and working with me understand my scheduling needs/issues with my FT job. The pay is a lot better than I found at any other place I considered, I am still doing what I enjoy, but it is a total change of scenery and, although morning comes early, the pay is worth it to just suck it up for a day. It's a lot easier when you know it's only for 1 day. If the hospital thing isn't looking promising, maybe consider a clinic that could use the extra help on the weekends, it's flu season and everyone needs their shots! GL!
  • Macy's has a flex team which goes on an as needed basis.

  • I have considered an extra nursing job but I'm trying to not burn myself out on nursing! I might look into it though. I figured a change of scenery would be nice although the pay would be significantly less if I choose anything but nursing.

    Thanks everyone

  • Hey, I'm a student studying nursing so I know all about finding a job with flexible hours. Pretty much all part time jobs are super flexible. I've worked at a pharmacy, grocery store, restaurant, kiddie indoor play center. They all worked around my schedule and gave me as many or as little hours as I needed. I would just tell my manager "hey next week I have finals, can you schedule me a short week" or I would tell her "hey I could use a few extra hours if you need me to pick up any shifts". You just have to communicate what you need and they will always work with you, also they have so many other people working there that someone will be able to work if you can't. Hope this helps and I hope you find a part-time job soon!

  •  part time child care/nanny! as a nurse you would be in high demand! i side nanny 3 mornings a week and bring in almost $200 a week! for 10 hours of work!
  • I second the child care recommendation. I babysit on evenings and weekends to bring in some more money and the families I work with are very flexible. They call me when they want someone and I tell them if I'm available. I don't make as much as the PP but I feel that my compensation is pretty fair for the amount of work I do. I don't have any children either, but if you've babysat as a teen, or even if you had a big family growing up, you probably had experience working with kids.
