Wedding question

I am helping my MIL and SIL plan SIL's wedding.  The wedding is at 6 p.m.  They were planning to do heavy hors-d'oeuvres (I think the menu they were looking at had the fruit/veggie/cheese spread, grilled chicken strips, a warm dip with bread and some sliced beef sandwiches or something like that).

I was looking through some of the prices online the caterer they have been most recommended (Running Wild/formerly Johnnie's) and saw that it appears that it would be cheaper to do one of their Italian meals than it would to do the heavy hors-d'oeuvres.  It also seems preferable to me since the wedding and reception are at dinner time.

If you served an actual meal at your reception instead of hors-d'oeuvres, did you also do a spread of veggies/fruit/cheese and crackers?  My MIL feels like they still should, and I honestly have no idea, so I wanted to poll you ladies.

Also, if you have any experience with this particular caterer or recommendations for other caterers to check out, that would be great too.  Thanks!

Re: Wedding question

  • I've been to a couple of weddings with a pasta spread, but they also had other snacky things along with it. I ate a little bit of it all ;)

If I were going to be at a 6pm wedding, I would expect more than a sandwich.

  • I agree - a 6pm wedding requires a meal.  I would also serve snacky stuff as well but I am of the general opinion that the more food the better.

I agree. I'd say a meal is a necessity and I'd err on the side of "too much" food rather than not enough.

  • I think I will suggest to them that they do maybe a choice of two different of the meals.  What do you all think of something like a choice of either the Italian chicken breast (which comes with bowtie pasta and either alfredo or marina sauce) or the meat lasagna?

I am not sure how many options caterers usually let you have on this kind of stuff, since we didn't do a meal at our wedding.  We will also have at least a few vegetarians in attendance, though, so if the chicken is separate from the pasta, that should cover all the bases there, or we may need a vegetarian option as well.

I will suggest that they also have a set up of fruits, veggies, cheeses, crackers and dips.  I think the combination of the meals (which come with a bread and a side, which will probably be a mixed greens salad) and the snack stuff will still cost about the same as the heavy hors-d'oeuvres and will be much more appropriate for the time of day.

  • Getting caterers to offer a meal choice was a giant PITA for us. I was amazed.that this seemed to be a foreign concept. I was also amazed that a buffet with two choices was at least equal in cost to a plated meal.

We had a meal, but no hor d'oeuvres and I definitely don't think anyone left hungry.

  • We did a sit-down meal. No hor d'oeuvres. We did have a candy bar, but I don't think that counts. :)
