Best time to book flights to Europe

Hi ladies,

Looking for some advice on the best time to book a flight to Europe.  My DH has a work trip in June to Sweden and I am looking to join him and then potentially fly home out of Norway or Denmark.

I have never been to Europe before so I haven't ever paid attention to when is the best time to book.  Any advice?

Re: Best time to book flights to Europe

  • If you're flying in June?  I would start watching flights now and book whenever they drop a little or you see a reasonable fare.  June is peak travel season for Europe (especially Scandinavia), so you're probably looking at paying over $1000 roundtrip.  $1200 is about average, and $1400+ is not unusual for the summer.

There are only two direct flights to the US from Norway (both to Newark on SAS and United), and pre-merger it was Continental's most lucrative European flight.  Basically it's booked solid every single day, and if I book a trip less than two months out, I usually can't even get a seat on it and have to connect somewhere else in Europe.  That's not a big deal (just a slightly longer trip), but it means that it's harder to snag great deals.  I would imagine that flying back from Copenhagen would open a bit more options, because it's a larger SAS hub.

If you have an idea of the dates you'll be flying, set up a Kayak fare alert and watch the fares for a few weeks to see what kinds of fares and options are available.  You might want to set up a few with different dates to compare.  Also look at roundtrip flights from Stockholm to see if there's much of a difference in fares, because there are a million flights within Scandinavia, and you don't have to pay extra to fly one-way.

As for the best time to buy?  Sooner is better.  Watch the fares for a few weeks or a month, and then book the next time the price is down.  The chances of hitting a sale that will work for you is extremely slim, because the airlines don't have any problem selling seats in June!
