Road trip from Kentucky to Louisiana

Hello! Normally when we vacation, we room in one city and do day trips to surrounding areas. This time, we are planning on doing a week long road trip from Louisville, KY to New Orleans, LA in May 2013. Some sights I?d like to see along the way are the Maker?s Mark distillery in Bardstown, Graceland, Memphis (if feasible), Biloxi, and possibly Jackson. What are some good sites or books you can recommend? Please give me any hotel, restaurant, and attraction tips. If there are things along the way that are worth checking out, we are game. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Re: Road trip from Kentucky to Louisiana

  • We did a similar road trip last Christmas that was a larger loop that included Little Rock and Dallas.

We just stayed at 21C Muesuem Hotel in Louisville last week and enjoyed it.  Loved the art gallery and red penguins.  Even if you don't stay, it is worth a visit as it is free and open to the public.  The location is a little off, but its just a few blocks away from 4th Street Live and the other hotels.   We enjoyed the NuLu area-there are several farm to fork restaurants, unique shops, and galleries. I loved a place called Taste Fine Wine and Bourbon where you could pay for samples of wine and bourbon and then purchase there.   Loved chocolates from Ghyslain.  For an inexpensive casual lunch Taco Punk was really good.  Also loved the historic homes in Old Louisville.  Not a fan of the mint julep myself!!!   The Brown hotel serves the famous hot brown sandwich.  We had dinner at the Oak Room as well as Brunch as the Sealbach and they were both really good.

We visited Buffalo Trace on our way to Lexington and enjoyed it.  There is an fairly new artisan trail I wish we had known about We plan to go back and visit some more distillaries.  Loved The Crushed Violet in Lexington- an unique fragrance boutique.

We stayed at The Peabody in Memphis.  I love historic hotels and really enjoyed the ducks and tea.  Dinner at the restaurant was really good as well, but it was only open part of the week.Breakfast was just okay and overpriced.  Beale street is right there.  I have visited Graceland a few times, but it has been a few years.  If I remember correctly it is on the outskirts of town.

Loved NOLA- so many great things in the French Quarter.  Loved just walking around and exploring.  We stayed at the Westin right on the river, it was just a hotwire snag that we got a good deal on.  We took the trolley to see the historic homes- beautiful.  We ate our way through the Quarter- Cafe Du Mondes, Muffalatta (sp?),  Emeril's Restaurants, King Cake, pralines, unique Popsicles, We pretty much just ate and drank the entire time.  We enjoyed a historical carriage ride tour.  Wish we had visited the cemeteries, but did not realize until we were going on our last day that they closed at 3pm.  Loved the cathedral and the area around it contained many performers and great people watching.  Writing this makes really want to go back.

We just made a quick stop in Biloxi for my husband to visit a cigar store and eat lunch- I don't recall the name, but it was right on the beach and pretty good.

I used to get lots of great advice on here, but it seems dead anymore.  I have been using hotwire with betterbidding.com to secure hotel deals.  It helps to try to narrow down the hotel you might get.  We also love to stay in B&B's so I read lots of reviews on Tripadvisor and bedandbreakfast.com.  TA is also useful for finding attractions and restaurants when taking reviews with a grain of salt.  I also try to look up issues of Edible whatevercity to find restaurants.   We tend to like upscale dinners with less expensive places for lunch focusing on farm to fork, seasonal, and gourmet  findings.  It is always helpful to visit the calandar of where you are visiting to see if anything interesting is happening while you are there.

    Happy Planning!
