Skiing -- Birthday Suprise for DH

My husband turns 40 in February and I want to do something really special for him.  For the past 3 years he has been talking about wanting to go skiing, well i have saved about 3K and I would like to take him, but I HAVE NO IDEA where to go  and when skiing is in season (I am assuming it is still good in February)...  I have no desire to ski, but I am wanting something that will appease him but in a romantic locations... Any ideas?  He mentioned Steamboat Springs, CO; but he went there once in college with an old girlfriend and I want to make new memories without him having flashbacks of her  ya know???  Any ideas?  I live in Louisiana, so we would be flying...

Re: Skiing -- Birthday Suprise for DH

  • how about vermont? i am dying to go there (and colorado too) to ski. my sister was there last year over christmas and loved it. I'll have to get the name of the resort for you, but i remember them raving about it. we talk about going when the kids get older with our whole fam.

    oh she did talk about this one i remember bc it's the von trapp family from sound of music. she didn't stay at this one though.

  • I'm an adaptive ski instructor who lives in NJ and teaches in Vermont on the weekends.  As much as I love VT, I can't recommend it for a "really special" birthday trip.  Vermont is much more likely to get really cold, to have the snow turn icy, or even to have to rely on artificial snow (although we've had a great start to this season).

    I would look into:

    anyplace in Utah (great snow and if you are near Park City or Salt Lake City there's usually plenty to do even if you aren't a skier);

    Brekenridge, CO (great skiing with a fun, western town);

    Vail, CO (all the best of US skiing with a lot of non-skiing options day and night, but fairly pricey); or even

    Whistler, British Columbia, Canada (the best ski town I've ever been to with every diversion imaginable and amazing, world class restaurants, along with North America's largest ski area and some of its best skiing; the ultimate in romance!).

  • I would recommend Whistler, B.C.  Great skiing but lots of other stuff to do as well. Very romantic atmosphere. However I know nothing about the price of flights etc so not sure how good it would be budget-wise.
