Recycling

Do you wash your recyclables before putting them in the trash? We went over a friends house yesterday and I was helping the wife in the kitchen. We used some cans so I went to rinse them out and she asked me why I was washing them and I told her to throw them out in the recycling and she told me not to bother, she never does. I thought everyone washed out things like jars, bottles, cans, etc.

I try to at least rinse everything out before tossing them into the recycling but if it's a soda bottle or something with a cap and I'm busy I will just throw it in. I'm more worried about it smelling because I don't take my recycling outside until the bag is full.

I thought you were "supposed to" rinse things out. I rinse out everything except beer cans, soda cans, and wine bottles.

Im with Big A on this. i rinse out some things, other things i dont. DH leaves his beer bottles on the counter and I rinse them out because I hate the smell of old beer. But i dont do it with my wine bottles. Cans of veggies or anything water based I dont, but anything thick or dairy based i do.

I should also say that we go through much much more recycling than we do regular trash. and we bring it to the township ourselves so we don't have to hang onto it all week. so nothing really sits for very long

Ugh our recycling only gets picked up every other week. So I asked for a second recycling can and they both get filled to the top every time. We have a second trash can in our pantry that is recycling only and its Chase's job to empty it every other day.

I dont wash certain bottles that I know wont smell but H's co worker didnt wash anything and they took the lids off so there was a can of pasta sauce all dried up sitting in the cabinet. I usually rinse out cans though because we store recycling in our closet so I dont want them to start smelling.

I feel like 95% of the stuff I recycle is paper, so no need to rinse, haha.

I rinse everything.

We recently found a company that picks up recycling every week. It's a good thing, too, because before we found them, we could go with our trash being picked up every other week if we wanted to, but our recycling was always full to bursting by the time they came to get it. Even with it being picked up every week now, the can is generally full.
