Shower help?

So I'm going to be the main planner in a shower we are going to throw for 2 friends of ours (she was a BM in my wedding).  They are having a destination wedding in Hawaii in May, so I am trying to keep costs down because a) we are already paying a lot of money to travel to the wedding and b) long story short, but I don't think we'll have any contributions from a parent (my mom paid for my venue rental and the food).

I was thinking that they'd like a couples shower.  I'd like to do booze & hors d'oeuvres instead of a full meal to help save costs.  The only couples shower I went to was a BBQ.  Unfortunately, February in Wisconsin = no outside activities.  What could we do to make sure the guys are entertained?

I was thinking either a wine or beer theme, and having it between 1pm-4pm (ish) on a Saturday.  We're thinking of renting the rec. area room of their apartment complex.  Any ideas of what we could do with a bunch of guys & girls on a Saturday afternoon besides just drink?

Re: Shower help?

  • How inexpensive are you planning on going? Is the guest list going to consist of mostly a younger crowd or lots of grandma's, aunts and such? Have you seen that new battle of the sexes game? Would it be a small enough group that you guys could play something like that. We played it last night at our NYE party and it was so funny! You could maybe do something like that and make a winner's gift of something small since the teams might be rather large depending on how big the party is. That would take away from having to play the typical shower games and to get everyone involved. Could you have someone come in to do a wine or beer tasting type event as well?

  • I REALLY like the idea of a battle of the sexes game! You could do it with a large group, they did it at our honeymoon resort one night. You just have two teams with individual and group challenges. Although not everyone participates its hilarious to watch! I can't remember any of the challenges now but I'm sure you could find ideas online.

  • I think a game like BOTS is a great idea!  I'm trying to think, but the only jack and jill type shower I've been to was also an outdoor barbeque type thing..  definitely not gonna happen in January here in CT, either :)

BOTS sounds like it's something that not everyone will have to participate in to enjoy..  Which is probably a good idea with a mixed crowd :)

  • Our shower was a couples shower and our friends had a couples shower also (both outside BBQs).  Our friends planned a game at their shower where we got in groups of 4 or 5 and picked one person in the group to be a "bride" and we made them a toilet paper dress.  Then all the "brides" had to model their TP dress for the real bride and she chose the winner.  It was SO funny!

At my shower our host had everyone fill out a card with advice for us, it was really cute.  Some were sweet and some were funny, I still have the cards and thought it was a cute idea.

There's also a fun game where beforehand you ask the bride and groom questions (they don't know their partners response) then during the shower you ask the bride questions about the groom and vice-versa to see who knows the most about the other.  That can be really funny depending on the questions that are asked.

  • comeongetdown reminded me of something that might work.  I did it for my SIL's shower, and it seemed to go over well!

We had a station set up with stationary and envelopes.  People would use the stationary to either write a letter, a memory, a piece of advice, or whatever they wanted, and then seal it up.  On the outside of the envelope, they would write the date (or anniversary) that they should open it.

They have envelopes to read at pretty much every anniversary, and various days in between (including their 73 day mark, when they had been married longer than Kim K haha).

They seem to enjoy opening the envelopes as the days come, and people seemed to enjoy writing.  It could work for a Jack and Jill, I bet!

  • I'm not really sure I am going to be much help since I too am planning a couples shower for one of my BM's at my house for Feb. Thank goodness it's Louisiana so it will be cold but yet warm enough for H to grill.

Since it will be Mardi Gras time that is the "theme." We are going to ask everyone to bring like a raffle gift which will be household items since most guys are more likely to do that than a gift off a registry. We don't really have too many plans for activities or anything other than IF it's warm enough maybe some outside games but that will depend on the weather. Other than that we will do the raffle and maybe the Shoe Game.
