we've decided to get chickens
we're going to put a chicken coop out back and raise chickens for fresh eggs for the entire family.
and MIL & FIL are going to get a cow so that we can have fresh organic milk.
2013 is going to be a healthy year for us!
Re: we've decided to get chickens
I think home raised eggs always taste better. My brothers friend raises chickens and we get eggs sometimes. My parents always had a coop growing up and the three of us took turns getting eggs and cleaning out the hen house.
Now the milk thing, is a great idea. How would you go about pasturizing it though?
we wouldn't need to. my FIL used to have lots of cows. he was a dairy farmer for 30 years and so he knows the drill. but we would have the cow tested for tb and stuff to make sure it was healthy and then we could just drink the milk raw.

That I would have to try. Does it taste different? How long is the shelf life? That is such a cool thing to start doing.
I have no idea about either of those. I don't actually drink milk, Ben does, I just cook with it. haha

A milk cow would would awesome! Now that Jeff is eating cereal in the mornings we go through 2 gallons a week!

Less than $2 a gallon!?
PS - your plan sounds awesome. What a cool thing to start doing. I wouldn't even know where to start ...
I think i've got a huge advantage with my FIL! he is a pro at this sort of thing. and Ben is 100% on board.
I think i'll have to give Ashley chores in the chicken coop. she'd really hate me then. or if I told her she needed to go milk the cow:)

HA!! Im picturing her carrying a milking stool kicking the grass mumbling under her breath about milking the stupid cow in 2013.
I really need to check out Aldi! I know where it's at and everytime i pass by I say I need to go in!
Tell her from my Uncle's experience: if the cow kicks you, don't kick it back. He broke his foot...
Totally jealous! I want farm animals but they just wouldn't do well on my 0.16 acre (and that includes my house). Get an alpaca and make sweaters and socks
On a serious note...remember it is whole milk coming out of the cow so there's alot more fat.
You know how women ovulate every month? Female chickens do the same thing. You do NOT want a daddy chicken or the females will lay fertilized eggs.
Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreally?
And that is why you are the Queen of Chickens.
Obvi!
And did you know chicken you buy from the grocery store is only 6-9 weeks old?
Stop! I can't take any more mind-blowing information.
OK thanks! I'll put it on the list

That's a really cool idea! It makes me wish we had enough room for some animals. Before we got married, DH built a house for a dairy farmer. He said he was going to give us one of his cows as a wedding gift, lol.
