Pitt girls-Bellefield gym?
Do any of you ladies use the gym at Bellefield? is it free for staff? Thoughts on the gym itself? Am I going to feel silly in front of a bunch of students?
I'm trying to look at options for when I can work out, and I think I just need to accept the fact that it's going to have to be during the day on my break and on weekends. I've tried the evening thing before, but Brian gets home so late that by the time we eat dinner and get the kids to bed, it's way too late for me.
Re: Pitt girls-Bellefield gym?
Emmy, I hope they've updated it since I used it in law school, but I wasn't a fan of the Bellefield gym at the time. It was pretty old, but I graduated 8 years ago, so hopefully they've fixed it up since then.
At CMU, my old boss used to work out at the same time I did, and I never gave it a second thought. Lots of professors used our small gym, and I always thought it was great that they were working out.
Oh, if only I had my college body back. I had so many body issues then, and I was a rail who almost looked anorexic. How things have changed in 12 years.
What are you looking to use, equipment-wise? I have been there a few times this fall term. I think the locker rooms are fine. Almost all of the lockers are locked (have to used Panther Funds to rent one) but I have stashed my bag under a bench and no one has bothered it - or I sometimes use a random locker that's available. There are four showers so getting one isn't a problem.
If you can get there before noon, your odds of getting a piece of equipment (treadmill, elliptical) are better. The fitness room itself is small and smelly and hot, I won't lie. I don't know about any of the weights - I've only used the treadmill a few times when I wasn't able to run outside.
Edited to add - and it's definitely not all students. Now that they have the Pete and equipment in many of the dorms, they leave the old gyms to the staff.
That's what I was figuring; the few times I've tried getting into an evening routine, I just can't stick with it. Working out at 8:30 or 9pm is ok for a few days, then I'm like screw it! I'm exhausted! I get up about as early as I can tolerate it as it is, so that's not an option either. During the day it might just have to be!!
Sundaygirl-I've never really been to a gym except randomly in college when my roommate would drag me with her, so I don't really know what I need. Definitely no weights, so I guess elliptical and treadmills are a good place to start?
Clearly, I'm quite clueless.

Let me put it another way - what are your goals in regards to exercise and fitness?
Emmy, my knees are bad, even after surgery, and I find the elliptical and bike to be the easiest on them. For a workout that uses my arms and legs, I like the elliptical with the moving arm bars. I feel that way I'm at least moving my whole body in some way.
I have high blood pressure; it's hereditary, nearly everyone in my family has it, so going off my medication is not so much a goal, but more doing what I can do to keep my heart in shape and keep myself from having to increase the dose of meds or add to the one I already have to take. So I just need something to get moving. The doctor recommended starting with 30 minutes, 3-4 times/week of some type of cardio activity.
