How often do you change out pillows?

So my pillows are 4 yrs old. I've washed them but still grossed out. Husband says we need to get new ones ever year at least.  What is your pillow situation?

Re: How often do you change out pillows?

  • We have foam latex pillows and they're almost 6 years old.  Since latex is not a natural material, dust mites don't live in them so I don't see a need to replace.  If you have cotton pillows and wash them (in hot water, maybe with a bit of bleach), I don't see a need to replace just because "it's time" unless you're ready.

Agree! A good wash in hot water, and some bleach should take care of any icky things living inside. Plus a run through the dryer on high will kill things off.

Unless our pillows lose their shape or get lumpy, we just wash and don't replace. We're on a tight budget though, and anything not totally necessary isn't on the list of things I can justify buying.

  • We replace our every few years, longer for nice ones, sooner for cheaper ones. I usually hold out for a good deal on some decent quality pillows now rather than buying cheapies. We use zip-up pillow covers under the pillowcase, so this keeps mites out and prevents the pillow from discoloring if DH sweats. I wash occasionally in hot water. They mostly get replaced because they get too flat and worn out. Worn out pillows get used for cat beds or given to the dog.

  • Check with a local cleaner - many will offer pillow cleaning and sanitizing. This will ensure they are fully cleaned without the risk of the wet down smell and the feather fill changing texture. Some may also re-tick which involves removing the fill and replacing with new, unused down fill.
