I'm looking to book my tickets for our March trip to the DC area soon and I've found a pretty good deal on flights into DC on US Airways. Usually we fly into Baltimore because it's cheaper and we can get a non-stop flight on Southwest. However, this time around non-stop flights into DC are almost $100 cheaper than we usually pay. It's been a while since I flew US Airways (I think the last time was in 2001), so I'm just curious how they rate these days and what the baggage carry-on process is like. We usually carry on bags, so I'm wondering what someone else's experience has been like as of late. (I've read their baggage policies, but I'd like to hear firsthand about any issues people have run into).
Re: US Airways
Our wedding on Wilson Island!
It may be cheaper but this is the worst airline I have ever flown. The staff is downright rude both on the plane and on the ground.
I stick with United and JetBlue when possible.
I tend to Fly US air because when my now husband and i were long distance he lived in one of their hubs...
so i was able to obtain quite a few miles, plus i have aUS airway credit card.
I will say though, that PP was right, unless you board in zone 1 or 2 they almost ALWAYS run out of room on the plane for carryons. But this is probably because people squeeze on these huge bags.
They have always been good about us moving seats to get a better seat (I prefer the bulkhead) but they are sticklers about upgrades and such.
Also, it is difficult to use your miles or companion fare
They are my airline of choice, I never really have a problem with them.
We fly US Air a lot - it started when we lived in Phoenix since it was a hub, and now a lot of times the cheapest flights out of DCA for us are on US Airways. We don't tend to have problems with them and almost always carry on our bags. If you are in Zone 4 or 5 it can get iffy if you will find a spot for your bag. If not they do check it for you for free.
My only main issue with US Air is that if the boarding process is going slow, they will say that the overhead compartments are full and will start checking people's bags. However this is not true as when you board, there will be tons of space available. It has happened to us twice now which was pretty irritating (trust me there is a reason I don't want to check bags to Vegas).
