In the winter, when you put your kid in their car seat, do you keep their winter coat on them?
Jack has a pea coat but it's too bulky when I try and strap him in to his seat and bunches up and I'm worried about safety if I were to get into an accident.
We typically warm the car up ahead of time and I do have a sweater jacket he wears over his clothes for the quick trip from house to car but I feel bad thinking he's cold.
Any suggestions for good winter jackets that aren't too bulky?

Re: Coats and car seats
Can you put the jacket on him backwards after you buckle him in?
Or maybe try a fleece instead?
DH and I talked about this very recently actually and are going to pick up a couple of thick blankets to keep in each of our cars for this very reason. We will put him in his fall jacket unless we're going somewhere where he'll be outside for an extended period of time.

Fleece is a good idea! Thanks!
Yeah, I did the coat on in the car twice and it made me too nervous so I just cover him with blankets as soon as he's buckled in.

This is what we do. We only wear the heavy winter jacket if we are going to be outside for a long time, it's actively snowing, or maybe if it was frigid. In that case we take it off. Otherwise she wears a Hanna Andersson jacket that is basically a fleece with a water resistant outer layer. It's not thick at all, and we just keep that on.
Danica's coat always comes off before she gets put in her car seat.
Confession: I haven't even bought Danica a true winter coat yet. Parents of the year over here. She's just been wearing her pink Target fleece (like a North Face). I usually have her layered and she's always so freaking hot. I know that she'll have a meltdown if I were to bundle her up in a big puffy hot coat. We aren't even really out in the cold too much so at this point, I'm questioning if I'm even going to get her one at this point.
We have a Polarn O pyret windfleece. The thing is warm and breathable but thin enough that a car seat tech said it was perfect for the car. M just outgrew the one I bought last winter. I got word they go on sale this weekend. I'm so glad to buy him the size up!
Hunter has a fleece pea coat similar to this

The heat in my car works when it wants to, and he kicks off blankets, so I have to cover him with something. I think I got mine at Kohls.
