Flights to Hawaii

In 2009, I found tickets from BWI to HNL for $300r/t including tax.  Needless to say, I booked those tickets right away and my DH and 7 yo DD had one of the best vacations ever!  My question is...was that price a one time find?  I have looked for flights ever since that trip and have never found anything close to that price.

This summer, I have been invited to attend a family member's 70th birthday party in HNL again and I've been hoping to find something at least in the $500s.  I have even tried breaking up the flight (pricing flights from the east coast to California and then from Cali to HNL or OGG).  I have still been unsuccessful at finding flights totaling around the $500 price range.

I'm just curious to know if I am being unrealistic.  I know prices to Hawaii are generally $700+ from the east coast.  However, I'd like to hear if anyone else has ever booked flights that were $500 or less from the east coast in July.

Thanks so much for your help.

Re: Flights to Hawaii

  • Wow, you found a great deal.  I never found anything under $550 when we went.  I used Bing.com and it tells you if the price is predicted to go up or down. Good luck.
  • Yes that fare you found was very much an exception. We lived in Honolulu for a year and had a lot of friends and family visit from the Midwest and east coast, and finding a flight for less than $750 was unusual. And that was in 2004. Summer will also be tough because it's a busy time of year for Hawaii. The only creative routing I might suggest is through Vegas combing flights on cheaper airlines.

  • We just went to Hawaii in Oct for our honeymoon and we flew from the east coast-it wasn't anywhere near $750 (meaning it was much higher) and we had 3 layovers..

  • We are going next month from the east coast and are paying $660 which we are happy with. I had been looking at prices for awhile and that seemed around the lowest. I have a friend who went last year and snagged $550 and we all thought that was amazing.

  • We found cheaper prices by booking 2 separate flights. The first to/from Las Vegas on Southwest, then from Vegas to Hawaii using Allegient Air. You just have to give yourself plenty of time between flights. That ended up being around $500for each of us though.
