Your suggestions....

Currently I am at a position where I am treated like dog crap but the pay is really good. So I started to search for another job....

I went for an interview for a job that matches my job qualifications but at the end of the interview was told the pay. The pay is 6000.00 less than I make now. But, it is a position that I will be gaining more viable job skills that will make me $$ later on plus the job is 9 miles from my home instead of 20 which I drive now and flexible hours (which I definitely do not have now).

I got a call from the HR dept asking me to come in for a second interview with the manager. Before we hung up she asked if the pay was okay with me considering I was looking for a bit more. I stated 'Being closer to home and flexibility out weight that so yea.'

Went in for a second interview with the manager. Interview went well and at the end he re-asked 'Are you good with the pay considering you get to be closer home and flexible hours.' 'I said 'Yea'

Usually I always counter offer.....but in this situation I am not sure. I want to ask, when they call me back to offer the position 'Is there any wiggle room for another couple thousand a year.' What do you all think?

Re: Your suggestions....

  • If you would be ok financially with making 6k less per year then I would definitely take the job, knowing that there is opportunity for advancement in the near future.

About asking for more money- I think if you do it in a nice way like how you stated it above, it can't hurt to ask. I just had an interview and I told the guy I was just gonna be honest and said 'I don't want to lose this job because I'm asking for too much but I would like X amount if possible.' He said he would work with me and do the best he could and ended up offering more than I had even expected.

    Good Luck!

  • I think you should have asked if salary was negotiable when HR and manager asked, you made it seem like salary would be acceptable.....(I would take the job because I'd like to be closer to home and your current job is not treating you right)
  • It seems like they already asked you a couple times if you were OK with the pay. You should have spoken up then. I think you missed your window.

This.  I would still ask, it's not going to hurt... but you missed your window to negotiate.

  • I agree with the other Nesties. You had two opportunities to negotiate salary, and didn't. I would take the opportunity if it is offered to you. If you accept it, take some time out to re-figure your budget. Good luck!
  • I think if you need/want to make more you should definitely ask. But you need to make a decision one way or another. I don't think it's a good idea to keep telling them that you are okay with the pay and then out of nowhere ask for more. That's just my two cents, but if I were hiring you that might bug me.
  • I would double check that the advancement opportunities are there and they are not just telling you that to gain you as an asset to their company. If so, then I believe the pay cut is worth it.

At this point, I think you have lost your ability to counter offer. That usually happens in the interview process. I don't think it will hurt but they may just cut their losses with you if you press too hard after saying twice that it was OK with you.

You will save a ton in gas....9miles vs. 20miles is pretty good and the flexable hours are a benefit in themselves.

All in all, it sounds like a good offer.
