Lots of Decorating Questions

H and I have been painting and decorating this house for the last year and now I've got a ton of new ideas that I am seriously considering as far as decorating goes. I wanted to run a few of them by you ladies to see what you think because I don't want to rush a new decision and then end up hating it.

Idea #1

Our half bath is a 5x5 room that is currently painted purple. H uses this bathroom more than I do so I have started calling it the 'man bathroom' I'm thinking that he would propbably like it if the room was a different color and I'm OK with painting this small of a space. My idea for this room was to do a pallet wall look on the wall that the vanity is on.

Wall Inspiration:

This is very similar to the vanity we have but not exact. The finish is the same and the counter top is white.

Currently there is nothing else is the room so it definitely needs some loving. Now my questions:, do you think this pallet wall would look good in this room and what color would you paint the other three walls? I was thinking something more along the lines of a brown but I don't want the room to appear too dark.

Idea #2

Our bedroom is roughly 23x20 in size, it is a huge room, and in my opinion it is a lot of wasted space. Our guest bedroom is a smaller 10x10 room and again, I feel that it is just wasted space, the only thing in our guest bedroom is a bed and two end tables. I'm considering switching rooms and making the guestroom our bedroom and what is currently our bedroom could become the guestroom/fun room. We have a ping pong table that currently sits where I want our dining room to be simply because we have no other place to put it. I would love to put the PP table, H's Xbox, a couple recliner chairs and the extra bed into the fun room and actually utilize the space. We don't need a bedroom that big and I really think it would be a great idea.

My only concern is if we ever have children, we'd have to take our third bedroom, which we currently use as an office (this really just means junk room) and make that into the nursery so there would have to be more switching of the rooms when/if children happen. Also, I really like the color scheme we have in our bedroom currently, grey and yellow, but our guestroom is a green/cream color. Would painting a smaller room a darker color make it appear too small? I would do an accent wall in Anonymous by Behr (we currently have this in our bedroom and it is darker than this sample shows):

Then paint the other 3 walls a lighter grey color:

These aren't the exact colors but just to give you an idea of what I am thinking. Do you think that would look OK in a smaller room? Our bedroom furniture is black and it looks really nice with the grey paint!

Our guestroom currently looks like this:

Quite empty! So, my question, do you ladies think I shoud switch rooms and color schemes? I like the idea of having a brighter 'fun room' that isn't all manly but still functions as a guestroom and I love the grey and yellow for our bedroom, I just don't know if I want to tackle painting everything again!

I hope this post makes sense and not just a bunch of ramblings and pictures. If this doesn't make sense please let me know! Thanks for taking the time to read this and for helping me out!

Re: Lots of Decorating Questions

  • I'm probably the least qualifed to be offering any sort of opinion, but I think that all sounds awesome!  We have so much work to do on our house, but are also thinking of just selling it (H has owned it for 8 years, and he and his ex-fi (they bought it 'together') did all the decorating/painting..)  The house needs a lot of work, in addition to the decorating changes I would want to make, but the payoff wouldn't make up for the money it would cost us to do all that stuff.

Wow, that was a really long way to say:  I love it, but don't take my word for it :) haha

  • Idea #1: I think the pallet wall would look great and would match very well with what you already have. I actually think it looks like that is a half bath in the picture anyways. As far as the wall color I like the one in the picture that teal kind of color because it is still manly. I think brown would be way too much but you could do a tan/creme color.

Idea #2: After seeing the picture of the current guest room I have a question is that an air mattress OR just a regular bed mattress?

If it is an air mattress I say deflate it and put it in the closet unless you need it and then keep your bedroom the way it is and put all the stuff in the current guest room for a "fun room."

If it is a regular bed mattress I say find a way to make it work by maybe rearranging or if the PP table folds a little bit you can push that into a corner. I know it's a smaller room and you think that the 2 of you don't need all the space of the current master bedroom. But if/when you have a kid you will be thankful for that space when you have a basinet and extra things in there for a baby.

Either way I think it would look good and you can't go wrong but in the long run you may want the bigger room. As far as the paint colors I think if you are going to do 1 wall a different color it needs to be a different color not just a different shade. It would make it stand out and pop more versus just being different.

  • I love that pallet wall.  Do you not have a mirror in that room, that you would be doing the pallet on the vainity wall? You could paint the other walls a kakhi color so its lighter.  I think green, blue, or yellow would look good too though!

It sounds like switching rooms would probably work best so you don't have the ping pong table in the dinning room lol.  I would probably repaint the rooms, because I love the color our room is and if we switched I would do the same.  Our old house is Valspar Oatbran and then each room had an accent wall.  When you have a baby you can always move the office stuff in the the spare room also.  Its a pretty good size so I would think you could make that work.

  • It's an actual bed, we have the frame for it at my parents house but haven't gotten around to getting it yet. Unfortunately, the PP table won't fit in the extra room because of the way the hallway is :(

  • I LOVE the pallet wall.  Now you have me thinking!?  I love the color in the picture or I would do a light yellow or light tannish color.  I wouldn't do a dark brown or dark tan color because I think it would get to be too dark in the small of a space.

The bedroom situation.  Hubby and I had this problem too.  We ultimately ended up staying in our guestroom because we wanted the attached bathroom.  We have the other bedroom literally as a guest bedroom/office for the time being.  We're going to be finishing our basement and putting in an actual guest bedroom down there when that is all finished, so for now this works for us.  I guess it's just a judgement call on your parts.  Keep in mind - rooms can and probably should be changed later when your life circumstances change.  So if you want to move into that room now and end up in a couple of years having a baby and decide to change things around - you always can!  I'm of the belief of make your house work for you now.  I mean we're not talking about knocking down walls and putting up different ones.  Make your house your home.  As far as the paint goes, I'm think if you're going to do a "stand out" wall - make it stand out with a completely different color.  On the other hand, we did this is our guest bedroom a couple of years ago and honestly, we're still not sure if we like it!  We did a medium tan color with one red wall (hubby just had to have a red wall in the house!).  The great thing about paint -- it can always be repainted!

  • Pallet wall is a very cool manly idea and I can not let H ever see it b/c he'll want to do that (and I'm trying to reduce the amazing amount of wood already in the house).

But back to your question- I would suggest a green sage or light/medium blue in that bathroom. I think the naturey colors balance the heavy of the wood. I think brown in such a small space would be too much unless it was super light.

I was also going to say this!  To answer your questions -

#1: Pretty much what she said =]  I'd balance the brown/warm tones with a cool tone color (purples, blues, cool greens).  I'd say that vanity is fairly traditional and the pallet wall look is relatively contemporary/rustic...so if I were looking to buy a new one that's not the one I'd pick but it's probably not worth buying a new one over.  The colors will go well and obviously I'm the only one who doesn't think the style doesn't quite match =]  I don't think most people will think anything of it, though.

#2: If you don't mind having a smaller bedroom, go for it!  And if you have kids, you don't need to necessarily make them take the office...you could always just switch it back to the way things are now and forego having a guest/fun room.  Dark colors do make small rooms appear smaller.  You could just paint the walls a light gray, you'd still have the contrast with your black bedroom furniture.  A darker accent wall would be okay, too.

I'd say for me, a) I wouldn't want a smaller bedroom and b) I'd be too lazy to paint it all again so I probably wouldn't switch personally.  But it's your house, you do what you want!

  • I loooovveee pallet walls. I run a home decorating blog and recently featured a DIY tutorial that was submitted by one of my readers. I hadn't seen a pallet wall before then and I was blown away by the huge impact it has. I also love that you can get the pallets you need for free! So cheap and simple!
