Cancun with LO....really need advise

Cancun with LO....really need advise I really need advise about taking my 5 yo LO to Cancun with DH's family. We would stay at an all inclusive hotel for a week in June. I'm apprehensive due to due to my tricky relationship with them and I'm trying to decide if it's worth going or not. I would love to see Mexico since I've never been but I'm seeing all the negatives and I need help seeing the big picture. DH's brother and sister are in their early 20's and will be ready to club hop and drink it up. So will DH and his parents and I'll be the boring lady with the kid. They've also explained that getting there is tricky because of customs and takes a full day. We need to fly from CA where we live to Houston and then on to Mexico. Can someone school me on the travel details? Aside from all that, are there a lot of kid friendly things to do other than swimming? We are very fair skinned and she can't stay in the sun/pool all day of she will burn to a crisp. How do I fill days with kids there? I appreciate any advise ladies

Re: Cancun with LO....really need advise

  • customs and immigration in cancun airport is a snap. the lines can get long but it's not difficult. if you have a layover it might take all day but, imo, it's worth it. dh and i go every year (returned on thursday night) and there's tons to do for you and for your 5yo. I suggest thought that you and DH have a long convo about what you both expect to do on this vacay and what you expect of him as well. who cares if bil and sil will be off having fun? they're supposed to do that. there's no reason you can't have fun with dh and lo too is there? i'm not sur3e what your LO's abilities are but the swimming's great, there's tons of day trips and beach thins and dolphin swims and just ebing on the beach playing. also i'm very fair skinned. get yourself some good sunscreen, stay in the shade and go and have a good time.
Friday, December 28 2012. The day I had emergency appendix surgery in Mexico and quit smoking. Proof that everything has a good side!! DH and I are happily child-free!! No due date or toddler tickers here!! my read shelf:
Alison's book recommendations, favorite quotes, book clubs, book trivia, book lists (read shelf)
  • I agree with the pp, customs in Cancun was easy -- much faster and easier than when I returned to the US!

As for going to an AI with a "little one" (I don't consider 5 little, by the way! A 5 year old can pretty much take care of themselves, unless you have a special needs child) it's going to be what you make of it. We're taking our 3 girls to an all inclusive in Jamaica in November when they will be 7, 4 and 2 years old. We plan to do some sight seeing, let the girls use the water park/pool area, plan on dropping them off at the Kids Club for a few hours each day if they are interested and depending on how they do we may pay for a "nanny" one night so we can have a romantic night out alone.

I also have to echo the pp in that you need to have a talk with your H and set some ground rules for the trip. I wouldn't want to go on a vacation with my husband only to have him abandon me and leave me to be the sole caregiver for OUR child. BIL & SIL can (and should!) go off and have a great time partying it up all day and night, but your H has a child and needs to, IMO, shoulder half of the parenting responsibility even while on vacation.

  • I would for sure discuss the arrangements and the plan first before deciding.  Like are in-laws going to take your LO sometimes so you can have some adult time?  Is your DH going to dump you in the hotel room every night alone with your LO?  Is he willing to take turns babysitting?

Find out if they are going to Cancun or Riviera Maya, Cancun is more party area, Riviera Maya is not.  Either way, your LO will love the pool and beach, if that gets boring there are always kids club with kids activities and side trips such as swimming with dolphins.

5 year old is not little, we just came back from Riviera Maya with our 2 year old, our friends had 5, 2, 9 month old and everyone had a great time.  I'm sure your LO would be fine on the plane rides with cartoons and books for entertainment and you'll have a great time.
