Elementary School ?

This is sort of random but I'm hoping someone can shed some light for me:

We're thinking of hiring my sister to be a nanny for the boys. She probably wouldn't start until August. My niece (her kid) starts kindergarten in September. They live in the same school district but she would be going to a different school than the kids in our neighborhood. Timing wise, for her to get her in time for us to leave for work, it would be super helpful if my niece could go to our school bc she could get here, help us get out the door, literally 5 minutes later put her kid on the bus and then her work day would be ending just about the time my niece got off the bus.

It was suggested we just say that they live with us but I'm NOT ok with lying to the school. If we got caught I have no clue what the consequences are but regardless, I dont need them knowing who we are before our own kids even get there. Is there such a thing of just going to the school board or something and see if this possible? Is it a pipe dream? I'm clueless. Any advice appreciated!

Re: Elementary School ?

  • Where I grewUp you could request changes. But I can't say how or why. I'd give the district a call.
  • You can request changes, but they tend to be few and far between.  It might be different if you are in the same district.  I know in the rare occassion when people do it between two districts, you are often charged tuition to do it.  Yup, tuition for public school.

Totally don't lie.  Someone just got slammed on this in the news, probably not far from you guys.  The family lived in NE Philly and lied and said the daughter lived with a family member in Montco.

  • I would have your sister call the school district and ask.  It's funny, I was just looking up registering Charlie for kindergarten in the fall (still blows my mind).  I know the boundaries for the school he is "supposed" to go to, but the website just says the child has to be a resident of our township

Also, when our neighbors moved here last year, their older son was in his last year of elementary school (still in our township, but not the elementary school within our boundaries), .  They kept him in his original school and it was fine.

  • I don't see your situation any different than a divorced couple that has one parent in one elementary school boundary, while another parent lives in another elementary school boundary.  The SD's are more concerned about "out of district" attendees, b/c they are truly ripping off the school system by not paying taxes into that specific district.
  • Thanks everyone! If we do this, she'll just have to go to the school district and ask. I am absolutely not going to lie about anything so if they deny her, we'll just to work something else out! I appreciate the input.
