Well, isn't this fun?

I've had an allergic reaction to my BC since I started it two months ago. Yay! About two weeks ago my legs started to get itchy. I wasn't sure why, but I figured it would go away. Maybe it's because its cold. So, it spread up my legs and onto my arms last week. Finally on Friday I called my doctor for an appoinment for Monday (yesterday). Over the weekend it got even worse! It spread to my ears (they are on fire!, puffy, red, and really dry/flaky) and eyes and face are all puffy.

My doctor didn't sound like anything really could be done about it as the meds have to leave my system. She gave me some pills to help with the itching, but she told me not to take them at work, and not drive while on them.

I look like I got into a fight with Mike Tyson! I really wish I had known that it was the BC earlier, I would have stoppped taking them sooner. I can't imagine what clients are thinking of when I talk to them.

Okay, end vent.

  • Did they give you prednisone??

I get allergic reactions to flowers, pumpkins.. anything that has pesticide spray on it, and I usually get Prednisone to take, and it helps a lot with the rash and itching and stuff.

  • I agree with PP- they should give you a steroid to help with the inflammation.  If it's really bad, ask for a shot of methylprednisolone in the office, and get a prescription for prednisone to take at home.  Hope you feel better soon, doesn't sound like fun at all!

  • No. She gave me hydroxyzine for itching, but nothing for swelling. I go back Thursday, but I have a feeling this isn't going to be any better by then.
  • They should have given you some type of steriod shot or something. I am allergic to penicillin (sp?) and have had a reaction similar to this before it sucks! And that's the nicest way to put it and you feel just aweful. Stay away from mirrors it's makes you feel worse and try taking oatmeal baths they do help for a little while.

    Hope it clears up soon!!!!

  • Ughh.  That sounds miserable..  I am/was highly allergic to Poison something or other, and would get it mostly on my face..  Everything would be swollen, and I'd be itchy in my ears and up my nose.  Yuck.  It's no fun, but I'm sure you know that already.

But like PPs have mentioned, the hospital gave me a steroid shot to help with the swelling.  I'm surprised they couldn't do something to help you!   I really really really hope it takes a hike and you feel more like yourself soon!

  • Ugh, I'm so sorry.  I had a similar reaction to a BC in college (got hives all over my body) and it sucked!!  I hope it travels through your system quickly and you feel better soon.
  • You should have gotten an injection of solu-medrol and a medrol dose pack if not contraindicated.  Can you take benadryl?
