30th Birthday Party Ideas

HI EVERYONE!!!!

I lurk, occasionally, and need to get into the habit of posting here more.

So, Mr. Beags is turning 30 in October and I want to throw him a surprise party.  He loves parties and surprises.

I'm hoping for a buffet or appetizer style.  I wanted a room at a restaurant, but cost is an issue.  Especially because if I invite all of his friends, there will be eleventy billion people there.

My first thought was Brauhaus Schmitz, but with ~50 people it's way more than I can afford.

Any ideas?

Re: 30th Birthday Party Ideas

  • No idea if they do private events but look into Frankford Hall, similar food and cool atmosphere, they have an outside courtyard with firepits that would be a great spot for a party/gathering.

I also looked into Lucky Strikes for DH's 30th, you could also do North Bowl which I think was more affordable than LS.

  • I don't know about food but for a great bar that can hook you up with good beer specials try the Dark Horse.  Had something for my sister's birthday there a few years ago.  They were great and it was a good time!
  • What's your budget?

  • SIL just had BIL's bday at Kildaires in Manayunk. At first I was like..this is gonna be eh, but it was pretty nice. She rented the upstairs for relatively cheap from 8-11. Everyone paid $20 for open bar for all 3 hours and then she paid for a ton of apps.

There is also the place we had my 30th but I can't remember the name so I'd have to get back to you haha.

This is a good suggestion because they have a bunch of private areas. A friend of mine had her husband's grad school graduation party there. We were in our own area with a private bar. It was a cash bar but the appetizers were provided.

  • In NW my thoughts would be earth, bread and brew thinking they could handle fifty in that joint plus good beer and pizza/app stuff. maybe the new joint goat's hallow.

What about a triumph brewery in old city  or another location?

  • Also Paddywhacks, had our reunion at the South St location, closed off the upstairs for 2 hours and had some food and open bar

  • DH had mine last year at Dave and Busters in Plymouth Meeting.  They gave us the front room area to ourselves and he arranged for an awesome buffet of appetizer type foods.  He left it as an open bar tab that he handed.  The food was great and there was a ton, the service was awesome and we all had a blast with all the games downstairs.  It was definitely my style and gave me something super fun to do since I had just had DD and couldn't drink.

  • Not sure of your budget, but Chickie's and Pete's in South Philly also has a private area plus they have Play 2.

  • The mister threw me a great surprise party back in 2008. He rented out one of our local coffee shops, did "open bar" for coffee, teas, desserts and brought in two sixtels of Sly Fox Beer, along with some trays of the usual party fare (ziti, roast beef, veggie tray, etc.)  I think the coffee shop cost $500 (which covered the 5 hour rental and the coffee/desserts) and the rest of the beer and food was pretty inexpensive.  I believe we had about 50 people
  • I would 2nd the Dark horse I have done a few private parties there and gotten good prices, and good food. We even got a reasonable open bar package one time.

Chickies and Petes is actually reasonable as well if that is your kind of atmosphere. The one in S Philly has a few private areas.

If you dont mind going to Conshohocken I did a couple 30th birthdays at The Great American Pub or PJ Wheilehans in Blue Bell....I probably spelled that wrong

  • I've been to several birthday parties at local firehalls.  In particular, the Highland Park firehall off of West Chester Pike rents out for $200 (plus a $100 deposit that you get back after the event).  I want to say that this particular hall holds 70 people?  They have a bar, a free jukebox, and a full kitchen.

And I went to a 40th birthday at a Havertown firehall near Brookline Blvd. which was pretty nice.

  • This was 5 years ago, but I threw my hubby's t chickies and Pete's in south Philly. To get the private room I had to order off a party menu, it was $20 or $25pp and they set it up as a buffet in the room. I paid for it and like 6 beer taps in the room, once they ran out I told everyone that the subsequent rounds were on them.

My hubby threw mine at silk city outside in the beer garden and everyone was on their own.
