Ok ladies...I need some opinions...
Base story...Hubby bought his 2005 cobalt brand new...it just hit 150,000 miles 2 days ago...his rack and pinion, sway bar..and a few other things are ready to go...he paid it off week before wedding...
Do we invest money we dont have slowly and fix it up and get a new car payment at a high price we cant swing with no money down...or..do we trade it in? and get brand new car/lightly used and just have the one payment until I get my licence ad we would need a 2nd car...(I know Im 26 and dont drive! lol..its a long story)
Im stressin about it...because also in my mind Im like..what if I would get preggo and we totally couldnt trust this car fully and would I want a baby in it??? my answer..no...but..Im torn cuz just going and getting another car down the road and it need work too...UGH...lol...
Also...what would you reccomend getting?? I was raised a ford girl..but ive always been a rebel and LOved Chevy...Hubby prefers chevy..but we not set on it...and...we trying to keep payment under 300...ugh ![]()
Re: To get a new car...or to not...
I agree with PP. Go with the new car it seems like an all around good choice. As far as what kind of car I would look at the ford fiesta, fusion, or focus all have good prices that I'm sure the note could be low enough on yet have good safety features. As for Chevys I would say the sonic or cruze. Personally I like the fords selection better right now. I'm a Chevy girl and H likes Fords we just bought me a ford because it was better all around with price and features.
Good luck and hope this helps!!
Is this the car that your H drives around on a daily basis or is this a 2nd car to you guys? What does your H think that you should do about it? Are you actively trying to get pregnant or are you just planning for the future?
For me personally, I wouldn't want another car payment so I would see what I could get away with doing to the car for the least amount of money to make it a more reliable vehicle until we could afford something newer. If I were you, I would get a quote for what it would cost to fix everything on the current car then look into getting a new car. Compare the two costs and see what your best option would be. If you can't afford a down payment then I would highly consider just trading in your current car for a new/used one to avoid a higher monthly payment.
Do you have any friends that could help you work on the car? I have a cobalt and last summer a part in the steering column needed to be replaced and the service place wanted $400+ to fix it. Hubby found the exact same part on Ebay for $30 so him and FIL replaced the part and I haven't had any problems since. So that might be something to look into for the time being to just get by with what you have now.
That's awesome! Thank God for handy husbands right?
This. Also I drive only Hyundai. I bought my first one in 2007 and second one last year. I LOVE their warranty and they are rated among the best for safety in consumer reports magazine that I just read. The Accent or Elantra sounds like would be in your price range.
First, I would find out how much the repairs are going to cost. You have a lot of miles on that car, so eventually it's going to become a money pit. And you won't get much for a trade in because they won't be able to sell it. I would look into a new car, or a used car. Go through the Sunday ads. You may be able to find a good deal on a 2012, since dealerships want to get ride of them and make room for the 2013s. Personally, I would stay away from Chevy and Ford, but that's my opinion.
I agree with PP, I would find out how much the repairs would be and how much someone is willing to give you for it now. Maybe once you figure that out you can make a decision. Maybe a lease is something that would work for you? I don't do this with my cars, but I know people that do and love it.
I just bought a new car. I was looking for something that I would feel comfortable driving my child in, as well as something affordable and stylish. I got a 2013 Honda CRV and I love it
Well...we got a new car Lol.
We talked about it most of the night and decided that yes we wanted to go the new route...and we decided to just go up to the dealership down the street and see what we could afford etc.
We did try for a 2012 Fusion with only 3000 miles..but alas...with our credit the payments were just not in our budge( and chevy etc would have been same boat)...so he talked to us about leasing and the pros and cons...and we went with it :0)
2013 Ford Focus SE 2 yr 24000 milage lease
So we going to have watch our milage now..but its not the lowest amount so we better there..and on the brightside..it will improve our credit after 2 yrs so we can get the car we want then or buy this one..etc But I am so realived now because they quoted 800 for trade in but managed to get them to do 1300...and it needed that and then some in repairs.
As far as having a family member do the work..we could have but he is never available when we would need him etc so this was the safest and most cost effective option
Thank you ladies for the advice and Melissa I remember ur cobalt blowing up
that was pretty much my turning point on his old car ...yikes! Scary!
I feel bad though cuz poor Hubby is sad about the old car..but I would be too..it was his first car
