preschooler hair loss

For the past month or so when I've been brushing DD's hair I've thought that the back seems to be getting thinner.  Today she had some knots, and although I was brushing gently, a good sized clump was easily pulled out.

Her hair is very long (down to her butt) so we do use a conditioner on it everytime we wash it (every other day) but I'd say as long as it's brushed daily knots aren't a huge problem or issue.

The portion that is thinning is rarely pulled into a ponytail or braid, so I don't htink it's from that.

Should  I scedule an appointment with the pedi? Any similar experiences?

  • I think if it seems out of the ordinary- I would call the pedi.  I rarely brush out more than a few hairs from EJ's head each day, her hair is only just past her shoulders. but I would rather have the peace of mind on something like this.

I don't know why I always come on her and ask if I should call the pedi.  I usually have a call into them before anyone replies.

But yes--it does seem ut of the ordinary.

  • That being said, I also wouldn't freak out either.  Hair loss can be caused by a lot of things, and it is most likely a very treatable!
  • I agree with Amanda, I wouldn't be worried, but I would have our pediatrician check it out.  I am experiencing hair loss as an adult, so if you do end up having any questions or needing additional resources, let me know!
  • Hair loss can be brought on by loss of protein. (Meghan - with you having had surgery for your gallbladder rather recently, you could be losing hair due to that; your body is taking all the protein you are eating and putting it towards healing from the surgery, so your hair and nails will lack in the protein department.)

Amy, has there been a significant change in DD's diet over the past 3 months, maybe, that could contribute to this?

Note - I am (obviously) not a doctor, but just some food for thought for when you do talk to your pediatrician. Keep us posted - I'm very curious!

Doctor's appointment is Friday.  I will keep you updated.

I don't think her diet has changed significantly.  She probably ate a lot more sweets than normal over Christmas, but she is typically a good eater.  I don't really have a problem getting her to eat a variety of foods.

I'd say that lately she seems to be eating a little less than normal, and there have been days where she said she wasn't hungry and didn't eat much, but last night for dinner she ate 2 /12 bowls of homemade chicken fried "rice".
