Help me pick out new kitchen handles, please!
While I'd LOVE a complete kitchen makeover, it is definitely not in the budget after the big projects we took on last year (we got a new roof, furnace and had AC installed). I'd like to freshen up my kitchen a little and I want to start with new handles for all the cabinets/drawers. We have oak cabinets and right now we have oh so awesome metal/ceramic pulls (you can see them in my siggy below). I'm just not sure what color handle goes best with that color cabinet. Suggestions? Bonus points if you can point me to a decent amount for cheap - I need like 25
Re: Help me pick out new kitchen handles, please!
we are also on the hunt for new kitchen hardware as we tackle a kitchen backsplash. the knobs and handles definitely add up $$! there are some really cute pieces at Anthropologie that i have my eye on. i also like the really plain/sleek pull like these ones at HD and think they look good with any color wood.

(sorry i have no idea how to post a pic on here!)
When my mom did her kitchen, she ended up at Home Depot. They were much more reasonable than anywhere else. I think they were about $3 each. This is the best picture I have.
Also, try Ikea. They have a lot of silver-toned hardware and it is super reasonable.
unsolicited advice, but I am a big fan of removing those stupid wavy boards above the sink. And check the spread on the screws on the pulls so you can try to avoid making new holes in the doors if they are different. I am not sure if I would go with a brushed nickle or something darker like an oil rubbed bronze on those cabinets. You can always buy a couple and return the ones that just don't go. Do you have any intentions of painting the cabinets? Or other decor decisions in the future for the room? I would try to consider those before replacing the hardware so they will still match at the end of the project.
I am trying to decide what color to make my cabinets so I can paint them and rid myself of some pretty hideous hardware... Mine may be worse than yours!
just a heads up - I made a mistake when changing out my hardware a few years ago. I went from brass to brushed nickel and I didn't realize until afterwards that you could see the hinges on my cabinets. So, my kitchen is all mis-matched. I'm not sure anyone but me has noticed, but still.
I think you see your hinges in that picture, so you may want to stick to an oil rubbed bronze or something in the same color family that you currently have.
good point Maria! though we had luck spray painting our hinges at the old house when we couldn't find hinges that would work on the doors in the color we wanted. It held up surprisingly well.
I'm petitioning for granite counters at some point, but it is a pretty low priority. If we did get the counters - they'd be a neutral color of some kind. The kitchen walls are kind of a butter color, so we'll probably leave for the time being (I'd love to paint, but I'm the painter in the house and with the high ceilings in our kitchen, it would be a massive undertaking). I think I am going to get new curtains just for a change and I'm praying for the day our appliances die and I can get matching ones (right now we have an odd mixture, which doesn't help). I don't see the cabinets changing for a long time as they're in really good shape. I'd actually be fine with getting rid of the stupid wavy board, but I'm not sure how to go about that (our handy-ness level is topping out at 'whee! Look at us installing handles!' :P).
I do like those handles, balbacm! And good point on the hinges, Maria. I think you're right - you can see them fairly easily.
Check the inside of the cabinets on each side of the wavy board. Towards the top. There will likely be two screws on each attaching the stupid wavy board. unscrew. and voila. gone
Oooh, I can definitely handle that. Thanks!
you are welcome. I am dangerous when left home alone with a screwdriver. I think this is the first time since we moved that K will be coming back from a trip and I have not done some project while he was away. (he doesn't like when I do this... says I start too many projects at one time... oops!)
I can't see pics at work, but from what I remember I think we have the same color cabinets - we used brushed nickel knobs. When we did our mini-kitchen update we also updated our lighting fixtures - it made a huge difference!
At some point this year, I'd like to paint our cabinets and put in a backsplash. This would also mean replacing our hardware, so if it happens sooner than later, you are welcome to them!
Amanda, you're like my husband. If he's left home alone with no projects and no children, he'll find something to tear apart and redo.
I remember him taking the day after the super bowl off. J was at daycare, I was a week from delivering Michael and at work. He got bored and decided to knock holes all through the walls of our living room, because he decided we needed surround sound, right that minute (mind you, we didn't own the speakers and I had no plans to spend the $$$$ for them any time soon). I was ready to kill him.
Amanda had some good suggestions! I think oil rubbed bronze may match your hinges better (provided they are the same color as your hardware appears in the kitchen). I definitely try to keep the holes the same so I don't have to drill when I do hardware.
I can see a combo of plain handles and cup pulls on the drawers:

I find it easiest to remove one of the old handles and take it to the store to line up with the new ones, vs measuring. Lowes and Home Depot have good selections, but you may have to go to a couple of stores to get the quantity you need.
Also, someone mentioned Anthro knobs I think... if you wanted to mix it up and do some of those check Hobby Lobby. They have a nice selection of Anthro style knobs for much less. And they put them on sale. I got these for Wes's dresser for half off, which made them $2.50 a piece.
http://tinyurl.com/b8gxfghI think I just found my DH's American twin. They'd be deadly together if they were neighbors, Lisa!
My three sons!
never thought to look there! i am on their website and they have some really cool stuff. thanks.
Crazy how similar some of them are to Anthro's right? Even at full price they aren't bad. The only thing I will say is that they just have a screw and washer that goes on the back, so it's a little different than the knobs you'd buy at a hardware store and they loosen easier. I'm not sure if Anthro's are like that or not. But for as pretty and inexpensive as they are, I don't mind having to tighten them periodically.
