New York

We are trying to plan a trip for our 5th year anniversary. It would be two nights and we would have to fly in. Is the enough time to see the city? If so, what are the main points we should hit and if anyone has any recommendations on where to stay that would be great! Thanks!

Re: New York

  • You could see some of the city in that time. You'd need years to see it all so don't worry about it. Just choose a few things to see and enjoy it

     Time of year? Budget?

Friday, December 28 2012. The day I had emergency appendix surgery in Mexico and quit smoking. Proof that everything has a good side!! DH and I are happily child-free!! No due date or toddler tickers here!! my read shelf:
Alison's book recommendations, favorite quotes, book clubs, book trivia, book lists (read shelf)
  • We were just there for two nights in October for a concert. So, that even limited our time more. I've been before, so I had an idea of what I wanted to see. We stayed near Grand Central Station and did a ton of walking, so we stuck to things in that general area- Times Square, Empire State, Macy's. We did miss Rockefeller Center and the Trade Center site, so we're probably going back in July for a night or two.I am really not a big city person at all (this trip was all about my DH!), so I am probably not one to talk to about seeing certain things. I felt overwhelmed by the crowds the entire time I was there!

  • We will be going sometime in Feb and March, no budget in mind, just reasonable.
  • I've lived 10 miles away from the city for my entire life and still haven't seen it all, so don't even try in two days, you'll exhaust yourself and not enjoy what you do see.  What is important to you... museums, destinations like Times Square, Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center, Central Park, or seeing an area such as The Village?

You could look into one of the double decker buses that allow you to hop on and off for a 24 hour period to maximize what you are able to see.

  • what are you guys interested in:

    the famous landmarks?

    museums/art?

    shopping/entertainment?

2 nights is tough but if you narrow down what your interested in ic an throw some ideas out for you :)  have fun nyc is the best!

  • Would like to see a show, want to see Statue of Liberty and other famous landmarks, at least one museum, Central Park, eat at some great places. Thanks!
  • FYI -- the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island are currently closed because of Hurricane Sandy.  That might change before your trip.  Just check the National Parks site before you spend time trying to head out there.  You can always just see it from Battery Park or other places around downtown.

Don't fear the subway.  It's a quick/easy/cheap way to get around town.

  • If I was going for two nights only, I would make reservations at two great restaurants, see a Broadway show (get cheap tickets at TKTS), and spend a while at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  I'd probably also try to do a bus or boat tour.
  • Thanks! Do you have any restaurants to suggest?
  • Not sure what your budget is or whether you want to go someplace trendy or more low-key, but our favorites include Momofuku Noodle Bar, Balthazar, Red Rooster in Harlem, 44 1/2 (for brunch), and Calliope.

  • Restaurant week is coming soon, book now!
