Hawaii Big Island hotel help....please.

Hi all!

I am just beginning to think about our trip to Maui and the Big Island.  H and I haven't been to BI before, so I am having a hard time deciding between the Kohalo or the Kona Coast.  I think I am leaning towards Kohala thus far....any input would be great.  I will tell you on Maui we much prefer Wailea over the Lahaina area, if that means anything to you, lol!

Also, I am trying to decide between the Fairmont Orchid or the Mauna Lani Hotels if we do decide on the Kohala coast area.  Any experience with either of these propeties?  I just can't decide!

    I have not stayed at the Fairmont Orchid, but I have a friend who did and they LOVED it. They could not stop raving. I have stayed at the Fairmont in Maui and thought it was fanastic and I think the Orchid gets better reviews than the Kea Lani.

    I stayed at the Orchid for my first anniversary (so almost 9 years ago), and I was in Kona for New Years. If you like Wailea you'll probably prefer Kohala, although it has its drawbacks (the resorts are really far apart, so dining options are limited without driving a ton). Kona is definitely more touristy. The beach at the Orchid is small (and I'm pretty sure manmade), but everything else was great. Let me know if you have any questions about the BI -- this last trip cemented it as my favorite Hawaiian island. There's a review of my first trip in my blog, but it was so long ago it might not be all that accurate anymore.

    Depending on when you go may also influence your decision. If you go in the winter the kohala coast can be very wet and rainy. Kona Coast in the winter is typically very good weather.
