Banksville Park (City Park Indoor Shelter)

Hi ladies,

Have any of you had or attended an event at the indoor shelter at Banksville park? I've lived in the area my entire life and had no idea they had an indoor shelter, so I have no experience.

I'm looking for a reasonably priced and close to home venue to have Gabriel's first birthday. We live in Beechview (close to most south hills areas) - any suggestions are welcome.

I have to get planning since 1/2 of the guests have to travel from NY.

TIA!

Re: Banksville Park (City Park Indoor Shelter)

  • we used Brentwood's fire department's room for EJ's first birthday.  I didn't think it was too expensive and it has a lot of windows and is a newer space.  So it was bright and open feeling.  I am not familiar with the shelter at Banksville park though
  • I went to an event there. Although the location is convenient and the space is a nice size, I wasn't too impressed. It just seemed a bit dirty to me, especially the bathroom. I wouldn't have wanted to have Adrian running around/on the floor of the space.

Other than that, it was fine. Plenty of parking, playground nearby, lots of folding tables and folding chairs provided, and a small kitchen area with a sink.

  • We just got back from seeing it. They've done some recent renovations and the place looks pretty nice. It's on our list. Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it!

We did too. They have a nicely equipped kitchen. I think the hall holds around 60 people.

I never knew that was there either until we went to a picnic for Preschool there in the fall. I was impressed with the fact that it was easy to access had ample bathrooms INSIDE and the kitchen area.

I also like that the playground is close and if you wanted to (and can) open all the doors in the summer it would be kind of a nice compromise to an outdoor venue. Ds's Birthday is in July ( #2 most likely will be too = /)

My only concern was if they actually use the pool, it may be a crowded area "inseason"

I have been meaning to look at rates- where did you get them?

Gabriel's birthday is in February, so the pool crowd isn't an issue for us. But you do have access to the pool with the room rental, which I think is really nice. If we ever had another one and it was a summer baby, I think that would be a great option.

The rates are very reasonable. It's $150 (w/o alcohol) $225 (w/) for 8 hour chunks of time. I found the info here: http://apps.pittsburghpa.gov/dpw/picnic_shelter_information_2013_final.pdf

    Congrats on Number 2!!!

Oh wow ya that isn't bad. Especially with pool access in the summer! and 8 hrs is more than enough time for a party even with set up and cleaning!

Thanks for the links and the congrats! ; )

( that should have said DS is in July not Dh..oops...)

  • I am planning my wedding for this June, and am looking for a rehearsal dinner venue. Do you have any pictures from your tour by chance, or any recommendations on whether it would be good for a rehearsal dinner?

  • I guess it depends on what you're going for, as far as your RD, is concerned. I don't have any pictures, but I can try to describe it.

It's got schoolhouse-style tile floor (like white, mauve, green). White walls. Long folding tables and folding chairs. It's a pretty casual atmosphere so if that's your style and you're having less than 70 people, it would work.

The facility has a kitchen with sink, fridge, and range/oven.
