**underwne**

I know that you're working as a professor at a local college. I was just wondering how you obtained that position and what your background is. Just curious.. I think being a professor would be so interesting!

Re: **underwne**

  • Hey!

I am a professor at Cecil College over across the Maryland Border in North East. I'm 23 so I'm a baby in the field. Most of the professors there have no idea I teach...I always get nasty looks in the faculty lunch room. Haha.

I have a B.A. in English and a M.A.T. in Teaching/Education. My school is relatively small so you find more professors with Masters there. Higher level Universities like Udel normally hire Ph.D. or those completing Ph.D programs.

I do love my job. The main issue I have right now is that I am qualified as adjunct which technically is part-time, but I work full-time. It is really a pay thing and I don't have benefits. It's not optimal, but my husband has to finish his degree at UD and it is TAKING forever because his research is not going well (Bacteria suck...). I'm going to be looking for a full-time position as an assistant or associate professor next year or a high school teacher.  I'd love to stay in the college field if I could, but it can be hard to find a job with fair pay with my experience level. I could work my way up over the next couple of years and deal with the bad pay, but H and I really want to buy a house and start a family, so I need to be more stable.

I do love it though! There are lots of colleges in the area like Wilmington, Del Tech and a college in PA (I cannot remember its name) that are hiring adjuncts all the time. If you have a masters in something, you can always give it a try.  You can find the listings in their employment listings.

  • A professor at 23?! That's awesome.

Thanks for the info. I'm always interested in how people end up in positions like that.
