QOTD 1/11

When looking for a house, what is/was your top must haves?  For those of you that already have a house, did you end up having to give up anything on the list?

Re: QOTD 1/11

  • DH already had a house before we got married but we decided that it is probably just a starter home. It's a bit small so in our next house we definitely want a larger house, a fireplace, gas stove (we currently have electric), a garage (we have to park in a lot right now...yuck!), and a larger kitchen.

  • My must haves were a big kitchen and a fireplace...check!

I never wanted a bi-level bc i was used to my parents house and their layout which is more of a colonial, but i love my house, especially since we got it brand new and didnt have to deal with fixing anything=)

  • Definately a garage.  We are in my husband's townhouse now and there is no garage, which is a pain when it snows or, like yesterday, when there was a thick layer of frost on the cars.  Also, a nice kitchen with lots of cabinets and counter space.  Also a basement that is large enough for at least a pool table.  We also do not want the master bedroom on the first floor.

  • Two full bathrooms is an absolute must. It's the one thing I miss about the crappy apartment H and I used to live in. One is just never enough, LOL. A finished or easily finishable attic or basement would be great, so H can use it for his office/mancave/game room without having to sacrifice one of the bedrooms for it.  And lots of storage. I'm pretty easy to please, house-wise. The house I grew up in was tiny and I've only ever lived in apartments of varying quality since then. All I really want is an extra bathroom and a washer/dryer I don't have to share with anyone else!!

  • We want a garage and a nice kitchen.  I have seen pics of houses with galley type kitchens and I know that I do not want something like that.  I would also like a more open layout for the kitchen, eating area and living room.  Oh a I would LOVE a walk-in closet in the master bedroom.  That is the one thing that I could live without though.

  • We were looking at foreclosures so we could fix it up, so our list wasn't too needy. The main concern was that the house was structurally sound and didn't need any big fixes anytime soon (roof, water heater, furnace, etc). Our other main concern was a garage and for him... a place to have a man cave one day. Haha.

  • We actually listed wants and needs for a house before we started looking.  We ended up looking at a model home that had it all and that was that.

    Needed 3 bedrooms, wanted 4

Needed garage since H is a gear head

Needed decent kitchen since I love cooking, wanted a HUGE kitchen with lots of counters and cabinet spaces

    Needed 2 bathrooms, wanted 2.5

Needed .25 acre, wanted LOTSA land

    etc...

  • When we bought our house now, our list consisted off: at least 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and open concept. We really lucked out with our house. It was a forclosure, so needed some work, but was structurely sound with a new roof.  Our house has 4 bedrooms, 2 baths with double sinks in each, big laundry, large kitchen that we completely renovated, 2 car garage with storage, nice lot with a storage shed, and our master has two walk in closets (mine is HUGE).

We will probably move into another house a few years from now. That house will be our forever home. I would like 5 bedrooms plus an office, 3 car garage, media room, game room/man cave, yard big enough for outdoor entertainment and pool, huge walk in closets in all rooms, his and hers closets in master, large kitchen with industrial appliances, and would love it to be new construction. Very long list!

  • It had to have at least 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a 2 car garage and an open floor plan.  I got all of those.  I wanted at least 2,000 sqaure feet and I think our house 1,800.

I can bend on a lot of things but the 2 full bathrooms is not one of them.

I also want a decent sized backyard for the dog, entertaining, and for the future kids to run around.

  • We are a loo-oo-o-n-g way off from buying a house (we live in NYC and it's just not affordable), but we're looking to move next summer, so our musts for our next apartment is a 2-bedroom (he works from home a lot and so it'd be nice to have an office space... plus, when we look at start trying to have kids, which won't be for a few years, it won't mean we have to move immediately), easier commutes, and allow dogs. We also have a dishwasher now (a true luxury in NYC one bedroom apartments!) and I can't say it's a "must" but I will be REALLY sad leaving that if we have to.

  • We would really like 2 full bathrooms and a large master bedroom.  Rooms other than the master don't have to be large, but we'd like to have at least 2 additional rooms (for now).  We currently live in a two bedroom, two bathroom townhouse but its large for what it is (almost 1400 square feet) and therefore we have been a little spoiled!  For its size, it actually has a surprisingly large master bedroom and bathroom.

We'd also like an attached garage (but its not a must).  Preferably not a huge fixer upper, but maybe an older home that needs some small fixes.

  • We really wanted a back yard for the dog to run around in and a finished basement. The house we're closing on next month has a fenced in back yard so that saves us a ton of money. We also wanted two full bathrooms which we got.

  • We must have 2 bathrooms.  We have one right now and on the same morning schedule.  Two is a necessity.  I hate hot air heat, so preferably hot water heat.  Natural gas, not oil.  Everything else is negotiable.  There are a lot of reasonably priced homes in our area right now, a little smaller than what we would like, but we could work with them.  Most of them need work, but we are willing to do the work.
