Guam!

DH and I got orders to Guam. Anyone been stationed there or been there? We are so anxious and excited!

Re: Guam!

  • Where are you moving from? Guam is very hot bc it's located near the equator. I personally enjoy Guam bc of the island lifestyle but some people find it very slow. The only American big name stores are Macys, Kmart and restusraunts. What else do you want to know?

  • We are currently in South Dakota, but will be in Korea for 1 year and then Guam. We love hot weather and beaches so we think we will like it! Is it a good place to start a family? How are the houses and local people? Thank you!

Well, I am a bit biased bc that is infact where my family is from. So to answer your question, yes its a good place to start a family. To answer more specifically, what do you consider a bad place to start a family? I'd live on base bc as far as I could see they have central air conditioning. The houses are made of cement (thank you tsunami) and mostly have window units. That is another reason I would suggest staying on base. Oh that and its significantly cheaper to shop on base than off base so why not be closer?

  • You being from there is actually the best view I can get. I would consider a good place to raise a family, if it had a good school system and the locals were nice and welcoming, and safe neighborhoods. I really wanted to live off base but you are convincing me to check out base housing. Thanks for all your input, its really helpful!

I do have a problem with the public school system. My MIL is a teacher and there are times she doesnt get paid bc there arent funds to fund shortages. Oh and there was this http://www.pacificnewscenter.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=16047:the-start-of-school-has-been-delayed-1-week-after-food-safety-conditions-questioned&catid=45:guam-news&Itemid=156 last year. I know of a few private religious schools that are good tho. Do you want those recomendations? Then again there are the on base schools http://www.guam.pac.dodea.edu/SitePages/Home.aspx

  • This is the first time I've ever posted on the nest I usually am never on here but just happened to see your post.

My husband and I are stationed in Guam right now for 4 years (have 3 years left).
I don't know if you are Air Force or Navy, we are Air Force and live on base right now.  But will more than likely move off in April when our lease is up.

I moved here when I was 32 weeks pregnant and gave birth at the Navy hospital.  It's a very old hospital but I had a good experience with everyone there.  If you are military then the child can go to school on base.  I don't have any experience with the schools but from what I have heard they seem to be good.

I must say Guam is a beautiful place to live.  It was hard being so far from home though starting a family.  If I could have chosen I would have wanted to have my baby back home just to be able to have my family to enjoy the experience with.
But overall Guam is a great duty station if you make the best of it and really get involved and meet people. :)

If you have any questions I'm more than happy to help.

  • Thanks! I am active duty air force. I didn't realize they had a school on base, that sounds great. We really want to live off base but we are debating right now.
  • We live decided to live on base for the first year to get a feel for the good and bad areas.  We are moving at the end of the month to paradise estates.  I'm excited about the move because base housing is not very big.  It was built in the 50's I think and back then houses just were built much smaller.  It's fine if you don't have kids but if you have a baby or multiple children it seems so cramped sometimes haha.

BAH is use it or lose it E4 or below is 2200 E5 and up is 2450.  You also get cost of living expenses if you live off base of I think it's 800 dollars a month to help with utilities which can be very costly.  From what I've heard utilities can range anywhere from 300 to over 800 if you are not careful with what you leave on and running the air all the time.  If you like your house cold on base might be the best bet haha.

There is an elementary school on the Air Force base within walking distance from housing it looks fairly new and nice but I haven't been on the inside. and the high school is on the Navy base and the kids get bussed there.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions or anything :)
