What is your fav travel guide book brand?

I am surprising my Mom with a trip to London and wanted to do it with a travel guide as her gift. Suggestions?  Even if you have not been to London please tell me what guides you have liked for other places. Thanks.

Re: What is your fav travel guide book brand?

  • I usually prefer Rick Steves and Fodors.  Also, if I remember correctly, Rick Steve's has a free audio walking tours app you can download to your smart phone.
  • I like the DK EyeWitness guides. I find that the photos and the museum maps make it easier to decide what to see, and the sketched neighborhood maps are great for self-guided walks. Plus they're kind of nice to look through even after the trip. (And their restaurant recs have generally been pretty good IMO.)

  • Ditto chicago! We did not do the audio tours, but we used Rick Steves for all of our trips to Europe.

  • My favorite for Europe is also Rick Steves, but I also like DK Eyewitness, Lonely Planet, and Moon Handbooks.
  • If you're doing research before you go I use Trip Advisor.
  • Fodors and Frommers books.

Does your mom have an ipad? For our trip to London i downloaded an app called Triposo (for London) and found it very helpful. It has a map that shows the attractions so you can see which ones are close to each other (not that a guidebook wouldn't have that) but also had an option where you could locate yourself on the map through the ipad's location service. And when you click on an attraction it would tell you about it.

  • Frommers!  Loved their recommendations on places to skip and ones that are worth it. Along with their guide on restaurants, hotels, etc.
