S/O tantrums -- thoughts on clothing fights

Maybe you all can offer a way around this problem that I can't see...

Lanna hates pants. She was initially fine with them, but when she was 1.5 I had to talk her into wearing a poofy dress for my sister's wedding and apparently I was a little too convincing b/c I swear since that day she has committed to a lifetime of baring her legs. Pants are now "itchy." I couldn't care less in warm weather, but as we all know that time is limited in Pgh.

At home I don't care if she wants to go around with freezing cold legs all winter, but now that she's in preschool I feel that she really does need to put something warmer on! First of all, I feel like I look like a crazy person letting her go out with bare legs when there's snow on the ground. And second, they're always reminding us that they may still take the kids outside even in cooler weather (although they never actually do).

I'm very accommodating of her sensibilities. One year she approved the use of cable knit tights under her dresses/skirts, so that's all she wore. Another year it was leggings. Currently, the closest thing to pants she'll wear is capri length leggings with tall boots. But even when I try to put her in the pants she most tolerates, she still fights with me! It's such a miserable way to start our day, and I'm concerned about what's going to happen next year when she's going to school everyday.

Has anyone had luck with this?

  • Brinley refuses to wear pants too.  We've never given her the option to not wear tights or leggings in the cold weather.  And even in the summer, daycare requires that she wear shorts or something under her dresses.  So we've just said that those are the rules.

If she fights me on it, I pull out a pair of jeans and a turtleneck and say she can either wear the dress with leggings, or she has to wear jeans and the brown turtleneck.  Which to her is the ultimate death sentence.

She may still whine, cry and protest, but she does atleast get dressed to avoid the jeans.  And FWIW--I'm fine with capri leggings and tall boots--in the end her legs and butt are covered.

Pretty much ditto all of this.  DD hasn't worn pants since she was 2.5.  She just stopped wanting to wear them and it's been skirts/dresses ever since.  When it is cold I tell her she has to wear leggings or tights.  And same thing, I say it's either that or pants.  That usually gets her to understand!!  I try to buy leggings or tights she will like in her favorite colors so she usually is apt to wear them.  Not that we don't have fights about it and she'll insist its warm enough.  Usually that's more around the change in seasons, in the middle of winter she's usually better.

  • Thankfully this is one issue I haven't had to deal with.  I would tell her that School says she needs something on her legs in the winter and she can't go without tights or legging.  (Pass the blame!)  I agree with pp, you could always say it's leggings or pants.

  • I have very few rules about clothing, but covered legs on a cold day is usually one of them.  But I was fighting battles at a younger age and she was told either leggins, tights, or pants. so now she already knows the drill. However if that doesn't work for you. let her legs be cold.  some fights are not worth the stress! And hopefully she will come to learn having cold legs on the playground isn't much fun.

Leg warmers may be an acceptable alternative too.  EJ wears those on cold days to Ballet.

  • My DD would never wear a dress!  Still won't for the most part...

I agree on the leggings, tights or leg warmers.  What about knee socks?  And if her legs are bare, as long as she is not outside playing, it is probably fine.

  • Oh - I forgot to add - I don't ever remember being could when I was little.  The faster metabolism makes up for a lot.

My DS doesn't wear a coat and he walks almost a mile to school.  He wears hat and gloves but not a coat.  He says he isn't cold.  And he probably isn't.

  • This public shaming thing is no joke. She came home from MIL's yesterday with nothing on but a pair of pants and proclaimed that she likes to wear pants now. She slept in them and then woke up and very politely asked to wear another pair of pants to school. So freaking weird.

LOL about her sleeping in them.  She really wanted to drive home a point, huh?

lol, she was probably like "wow, these pants sure do a good job of keeping my legs warm! Mom, why didn't you ever get me these before?"  Eleni just started wearing pants this past fall without being forced into it.  She will wear jeans a few times a week now.

  • Just so you all know, she's still worshiping pants. That's the power of the internet.
