WDYT of the Manti Te'o girlfriend hoax story?

Re: WDYT of the Manti Te'o girlfriend hoax story?
I got to a certain part and couldn't read anymore with all the twitter accounts and names I am not familiar with and I got lost. SO I figure he either
1. is super gullible and taken advantage of
2. is insane and made up a huge lie
3. is evil, and was using the sympathy for publicity
DH and I have been following this. We're big ND fans and really liked Te'o this year.
On one hand - I think it's so crazy that how can it be true? I mean really, it's out there. To have a girlfriend you met online, but it turns out she never existed? Sounds fishy. On the other hand, it's so crazy that how could he make it up? I'm trying to withold judgement til everything shakes out over the next few weeks. I will say, though, that I think ND coming out and saying their 100% supportive of Te'o and believe him fully is interesting. I don't think they'd be saying that lightly, so it makes me think maybe there is some truth. But it is a giant mess.
I can't make heads or tails of it. There are tons of people involved -- weird football connections, etc. I do believe that someone could get duped into a relationship online with someone who turns out to be fake. But then his dad's quotes about her seem a little fishy. And it seems like he knew the guy who made the girlfriend up. Crazy!
These days, I never believe what a football program has to say about their players. It's all about $$$ and it seems like schools will say anything to protect their big money maker programs and stars.
All I know about it, I heard on DVE this morning. But, I will say that I lurk on another board and a girl there got "catfished" by someone and the story was so similar. (Falling in love online, all meetings ended up cancelled, person ended up "dying"). It was just a big hoax for no reason other than to play her. So I think there could be truth to it.
I also don't get why no one else dug in to this story. He's all over news shows telling his sob story and not one reporter thought "hey, we'll get her mom/dad/brother/sister" on the show, too!" I don't know why someone would make something like that up for publicity, but I guess it's not completely unimaginable. It's definitely one of the weirdest things I've ever heard!
It just shows you how much I do not know about college football anymore b/c I knew nothing of this until this morning. That being said, the whole "car accident/leukemia/bone marrow transplant angle was enough to make me say
"you are either in on it or a complete idiot". And I'm thinking the former.

Because your girlfriends are really your boyfriends, but since you are Mormon, attending a Catholic school, and a football player, you will go to any extreme to hide the fact that you are gay. There doesn't seem to be any malicious intent involved, and there are too many holes to support the "catfish" story, so I honestly can't think of any other reason that would make this story make sense. Maybe I am just getting caught up in all of the speculating going on. Either way, I hope it works out for the kid, I kind of feel bad for him.
he's gay? wow. i am beyond confused!! LOL!
No, I was just speculating! Amongst all of the stories and rumors going around, there are a lot saying that he did this to cover up the fact that he was gay. I was just saying that out of all of the possible reasons for this story, that is the one that makes the most sense to me. Sorry to add to the confusion! LOL!
I thought I read/heard that they actually met outside of a Stanford game years ago (their hands touched, eyes met!) but since then they just communicated via phone/computer. Because apparently aside from the fact he could never get back to California to see her. the kid doesn't have a computer to skype or a phone to facetime
