What are your opinions about travel insurance? What is your experience with travel insurance? We are booking an AI trip costing less than $3,000, we are trying to determine if we should get travel insurance.
Thanks.
Re: Travel Insurance?
Please get it. A lot of people will probably say you can take a chance, but these are things to consider.
Insurance covers "little things" that we all think about like lost/delayed luggage, trip delays (hotels, meals...) and for the bigger things that we don't like medical expenses. Or more importantly, getting you home if need be.
Most people think they are young and healthy and that no matter what, they are going on the trip. But if something came up and you couldn't go, could you afford to lose the money? Even if you have good health coverage, will it cover you where you are going? If something happened to either of you on the trip and you needed to be airlifted home, do you have a credit card that can potentially hold at least $10k (if not more depending where you're going)?
These are the reasons to buy travel insurance.
I like Allianz (www.allianztravelinsurance.com) because they offer a lot of coverage and aren't that expensive.
Hope that helps..but you're welcome to pm me if you have any other questions.
first you need to find out what the hotel's cancellation policy is. i'll give you a little story about what happened to me over christmas/new years weeks. dh and i had our week at our timeshare at christmas and then a week at an AI down the coast for new years week. on dec 28 i was rushed to cancun hospital with apendicitis and a bad infection and had it removed that night. i had no prior pain before that day. i never have any heath problems, am in great shape, eat well, exercise and am fit. i haven't been in the hospital ever in my life except after a car accident 12 years ago where my cornea was dented from the airbag. so there you have it. our medical coverage does cover out of country so that was fine however since it was a holiday weekend and there wasn't anyone at the insurance company to confrirm coverage so we had to pay for my surgery and 4 days at the hospital before we left. no bother-we'l be reimbursed. but make sure you know if the company will have 24/7coverage or if it's on reimbursement status. we called the other hotel down the coast on saturday and ended up being charged for that day because they have a 24 hour cancellation policy. we did receive a full refund for the rest of the week. we did not have to change our flights but did have to reserve a room at the same hotel in cancun for the rest of the week.
all in all-make sure you know what the situations are for everything. do you need it for the hotel if there's a 24 hour cancellation policy? probably not imo. what about flights? generally if there's an emergency they'll hold your fare in a bank to use later but you can call the airline and ask or you can buy refundable tickets. 3rdly find out if your medical coverage is international and what it covers. not for nothing but the issue of 'geting you back home' didn't matter in my case. i wouldn't have made it home so that's why I had the surgery there and then recouped for a few days.
ETA: i've used insuremytrip.com for years and love it. it's an aggregator site that allows side by side comparison of coverages and exclusions and limits as per your trip specifids. for trips with no hotel cancellation policy etc... that we'd lose a ton on i have purchased policies from them.Good..and hopefully you won't need it at all. But in case something happens, better to have it and know you're covered instead of hoping you credit card company will pay, or that you're covered under your regular health insurance.
BTW..where are you going?! Hope you have a great time!!!
